DescriptionPublished 1969.Between Hammer and Anvil! written by Arnold Drake. Carol Danvers is captured by Cyberex, a giant robot, who has been programmed to kill Dr. Walter Larson. This page is one of the reasons I love this era Don Heck's art. Carol looks positively beautiful and elegant on this page especially panel 4. I love the panel layout and the close up of the robot on panel 5 to give a chilling effect to its words. And the oft maligned Vinnie Colletta did a great job inking here. Social/Sharing |

I wholeheartedly agree with your insight about Heck and Colletta's work on this page. It's a beauty.

H.E.L.P.! I need somebody
Heck! Not just any Vinnie
Help! You know I need Lawson
Heck!
(When) When Carol Danvers (When she was young) she was young in Silver Age
(She always need) She always needed Captain Mar-Vell's help in every page
(Now) But now those days are gone (Those days are gone) and She’s now more self assured
(And now I find) Now I find the Kree hive mind, Now Carol does much more
Heck did all he can, he pencilled down
And I do appreciate Vin being 'round
Help me get my hammer anvil pound
Won't you please, ESP?
(Now) And now Heck's lines have changed (My life has changed) inked in Colletta ways
(My trepedation) of Vince Colletta seems to vanish in the Drake
(But) But ev'ry now (Every now and then) and then I can see what's in store
(I know that I) I know that I love this page like I've never loved before

Terrific page layout by Heck, reinforcing the sense of imprisonment.

Appreciate the clean open style throughout this page.
Don Heck was underappreciated. And give credit where due. Coletta does a fine job on these inks. (Must not have been a rush overnighter!)
Nice page. Thanks for posting and sharing here on CAF!

Yeah, this is a really nice example from this era. All credit to Colletta, who softened out Heck's sharper, sketchier and more angular line. Colletta deserves most of the credit for the overall finished look of the page, though Heck of course deserves credit for the storytelling and panel layouts. Very solid Silver Age page!
