DescriptionAfter a quite steady diet of DC comics, Marvel comics under the masterful hand of Stan Lee together with a collection of probably the best comics artists ever literally floored me - both in the quality of the writing and, of course, the artwork. I never abandoned DC comics but Marvel took center stage from then onwards. As if all that was not sufficient, team crossovers such as the one in the present issue took Marvel comics to yet another level. I must confess that the cover of this issue alone was worth the price of admission. Many, many years later, I was so glad to be able to obtain the present page and have been its steward ever since. I alluded to the best comics artists and the pencils here are by Jack (The King) Kirby himself - with very nice inks by Chic Stone (although I prefer Sinnott inks which, in some quarters, is viewed as a heresy by those who love Stone inks over Kirby pencils - I much prefer, though, the much bolder ink strokes of Joe Sinnott, at least insofar as the FF are concerned). All in all, though, a really nice page featuring members of both the FF and the X-Men.Social/Sharing |

Thanks so much, Mark! I bid unsuccessfully for this page when it first came to the market. I doubt, though, that I would be in the running were this page to be in auction today. It is therefore wise to love what we have rather than be dissatisfied at what we cannot now obtain.

An absolute stunner of a page. The characters, the artists, if this doesn't scream "make mine Marvel" nothing will.

Kirby and Lee were masterful in crafting these crossover stories to really unify the Marvel Universe and have an ecosystem that benefitted every title to build this house of ideas. None of them were much more powerful than the other making their fights and their team ups so much more interesting. Classic story and the Stone inks really does add to the charm of the look that is still raw and unpredictable.

Dear Marcus, many thanks as always - especially for your masterful comments which demonstrates such an intimate knowledge of not only the Marvel Universe but all comics universes as we know them.

Splendid plethora of two of the heavy weight superhero teams the FF and the X-Men. What no Avengers? lol. Kirby Sinnott yes the best team hands down but you can't deny how good Chic over Jack looks on this gorgeous page. When the Tony Christopher collection broke up years and years ago into several hands I had a clear shot a great page frrom this issue but couldn't raise the dough in time. Congrats this one is nominated to the OA Hall of Fame.

Dear Michael, many thanks! And congrats on your own museum-worthy collection! Money was hard to come by in those days gone by. It was a real struggle then to gather in funds (even with time payments). Who would have known, though, that fast forward decades and many of us (myself for sure) would not be able to ever afford pages of this quality. Fortunately, I love original art generally and there are up and coming new artists whose work is more affordable (but even some of those artists' work now go for crazy money). I am digging into the remaining treasures I have and will post periodically (such as this one). Completely OT, love your backstory on how you recently got your Simonson Thor (and have explained why). I will post a Thor piece myself in the near future (with similar psychology).

I prefer Sinnott to Stone as well, but you can't deny how fabulous this page is! These early team crossover issues by Marvel were epic and really signaled what was to come decades later with massive crossover storylines into every Marvel title. Congrats on acquiring a slice of Marvel history!

Many thanks, West! In fairness, Stone's inks complemented Kirby's art very well too. And, as you have astutely observed, this is a fabulous page indeed.

I think you can safely rest on your collecting laurels. You bought great stuff. Prices have gone totally insane. Silver age stuff like this is now only the preserve of rich people.

Dear Peter, many thanks! I totally agree and can only hope that the well heeled now purchase out of the same passion which many of us have for the hobby and not mainly for extraneous reasons.

An early X-Men crossover page is some real Marvel magic. Also, like you, while I may prefer Sinnott's inks on the FF, I do have a strange affection for the way Stone inked Kirby.

Dear Timothy, many thanks! Yes, I do have the same feeling - for some strange reason, I think that his inks on the Thing particularly resonate with me (perhaps because it's less "bricky" than Sinnott's version).

I too, like many fans, prefer Sinnott's inks over Stone's, but this earlier period still looks wonderful. In retrospect, how prescient was it of you to decide to go after as many pieces from your favourite time period as you did? I mean this art was never "cheap", but at least it was still affordable to many more people back when you picked this up, than these types of pages have been in recent years. Not only that, but you were able to acquire an example with extremely high content quality. Absolutely magnificent!

Many thanks, Rubén! As the old saying goes, "Hindsight is 20/20 vision." So I can lay no claim to foresight or prescience. You will see from my CAF Gallery, though, that I do like variety. And I have so many reasons (many in different combinations depending on the piece) as to why I would purchase something. For this, it was a mixture of nostalgia and content (team up), together with the artwork (which was still excellent for me).

Many thanks, Nils. The reality of relationships, though, as crafted by Stan Lee was in those earlier issues as well (as demonstrated in this page).

An absolutely wonderful page from my own favorite period of Marvel and the FF! I remember buying this issue from the rack and reading it over and over. (Speaking of inks, I have a soft spot for the Fantastic Four as inked by Dick Ayers, myself.)

Many thanks, and many thanks for reminding me about Dick Ayers. Congratulations on having pages inked by him in your CAF Gallery in FF #19 (I have one sample from FF #10 in my CAF Gallery as well). It may well be that we have particularly soft spots for artists whom we grew up reading comics with. Perhaps that explains my affinity for Sinnott's inking.

The King! That's a superb page. The X-men's raid on the Baxter Building added to the sense of mystery at the time of who the team really were. The glance out of the window in the sixth panel, and the characters dashing through their locations in parallel, show superb storytelling - it really zips along.
