DescriptionNorman Nodel: "A-Robbin' Upon the Salt Sea", Complete 4-page story from Pirates, "The World Around Us" Series #7, (Gilberton, 1959). Nodel used his considerable scratchboard skills to tell the (true) story of an old Scottish ballad about a boy who turned pirate. Scratchboard is time-consuming - that's why comic book artists rarely used it - except for Nodel, a successful magazine illustrator, this assignment must have been a labor of love. The art image size is 10.5" x 18".When I received the art all text pieces were almost loose, as was most of the scratchboard on the splash page. I took some photos before reassembling the splash. Love the three layers and the detail on the scratchboard. Great page!

Pretty nice technique we don't see much of anymore! The work on the scroll work alone is impressive, but everything in it is also top notch.
