DescriptionAnother piece acquired from the Columbus trip was this beautiful Madman interior page. Not only did I come home with this, but I also got to spend some quality time with Simon from Got Super Powers?. He is Mike Allred's rep, and although I don't really want to admit it, he's one hell of a guy :) He had many Allred pages for sale at the event, including some pretty sweet Batman 66' covers. It was a sincere pleasure to get to hang out with him over the course of the weekend. He even managed to give me a hard time, which I appreciate.I went for this specific interior not only because of the great detail and panel layout, but also the crossover appearance on this page. In the first and last panel we see The Big Guy, from Frank Miller and Geof Darrow's book, “The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot”. The Big Guy had cameos in Issues #6 and #7 of the Madman series, so being a big Darrow fan I was very happy to get a page from one of these two issues. Once again Chuck Arnold was quick to spot The Big Guy in the panel as we went through the piles of Allred. He might possibly be my comic art guardian angel. There is something to like on every panel of this page. The top and bottom panels are fleshed out and have plenty of detail. Next we have a shot of the doctor himself, albeit horizontal and not in the best condition. I'm a fan of the character design for Dr. Boiffard, and maybe it's just because I love Kang. I also love the Tri-Eye, tri-panel flip of the match sequence that ends with a little “HEH”. Overall, Mike Allred has some of the cleanest line work in the business, and it's on full display here. Thank you so much Simon! Proud to add this page to the collection. You can find art from Mike Allred, as well as commission information at Got Super Powers?. Social/Sharing |

But did you get the Darkseid?! 😆 This is such an awesome page and definitely the one I would've picked up. Love that last panel and the cool circular inset panel at the top. Congrats on another addition to your incredible collection!

You picked a great example to pull from the stack of art you liked from Simon's offerings. Great page, glad that you landed one of the big pages. Great seeing you at the Columbus Art Show!

Madman in his heyday! I remember reading this as if it were yesterday. Allred's art and storytelling were already so strong and he's only gotten better over the years. Congrats, Tyler!

It's interesting, I rarely get enthused when I see Allred's art on mainstream boks and characters, but whenever I see a Madman page, I just love it!

Out of all the Allred art this was the best one I saw all weekend. A real beauty, Tyler.

This has that really nice more refined look for Madman when he was in high demand from the big 2 because of his indie fresh retro takes as the industry was moving away from grim and gritty and back towards more traditional clean storytelling.

Such a beautiful page - you clearly show some level of good judgement, though you clearly need more Darkseid art.
Darkseid Is.
Everytime you look at this page, flick a matchstick in your mouth and think fondly of me. And the Darkseid that got away...

Thanks Simon, key words here are "some level". I openly admit to not all levels. I wear it like a badge of honor. By chance, have you seen my Harren Darkseid page? It's really, really, really good.
I think you're right though, I would absolutely love to see Allred's take on the character!
The flick a matchstick comment stings.
