DescriptionA great page from a classic story There is No Hope in Crime Alley - I remember reading through my copy of the Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told so many times as a kid and loving these amazing (albeit vintage shall we say) comics. This page does hold up well even as a one-pager, with great panel work and motion throughout. Gotta love those border breaks of the thug in the first panel as well as Batman's backhand in the last. The middle panel flow is great with Batman's looming presence getting closer and closer (with that screen tone overlay on the gun to shadow it) - really gives you a sense of doom for the holder of the gun.Social/Sharing |

Great piece with Batman leaping on to the page in that first panel.

So envious of you on this one! Recognized this page and remembered the dialogue before making it large enough for my aging eyes to view it. What a fantastic page! It was less than a year into my comic collecting mania and although Batman wasn't one of my favorites I'd still pick up any issues I found if I had enough money. So I'd read a number of Batman stories by this issue's release. Even as a nine year old I knew this story was different from the others and felt its weight and impact and it become one of my favorites. Year's later I'd read about how signficant this story was to so many Batman fans. It's a joy to savor this page with its dynamic and deliberate action flow. I especially love that third panel of the thug holding the gun in front of him and the little lines to its sides conveying the fear in his shaky hands. Brilliant comic story telling and layout. Denny O'Neil doing comics as they should be done - Dick Giordano's always eye-appealing pencils - and Terry (everything I touch is gold) Austin's inks. Easy to understand why this is a bronze age classic! So good! Congrats on owning this beauty.

A page of not only action, but the full emotional weight of Batman behind every word, every motion, in every panel. The issue spoke to the core and motivation of Batman as a character. Giordano and Austin knew this story required more than a typical effort of the era.

Detective Comics 457 is a classic and just one of the best Batman stories ever. Every page is great. Top tier script and dialog by Denny O'Neil and Dick Giordano.

Fantastic Detective Comics page by the amazing Dick Giordano and Terry Austin! Love the opening panel with Batman's feet bursting out of the panel box! Giordano also uses that technique in the final panel where Batman slaps the gunman, with Batman's head and arm exploding out of the frame! Fabulous page, congrats!
