Description

Silverheels blew me away when it came out, and I still enjoy revisiting it 38 years later. I believe it was the first multi-issue comic story with painted interiors, in this case with black ink and colored dyes. Here we see our hero and his nemesis talking trash before the final contest. I love Hampton's faces, characters, and creature designs, but his environments are just as memorable for me. This is a particularly lush page showing the forested arena the combatants inhabit. It's amazing how vibrant the colors are after all these years.

Gorgeous work by Scott, especially since he was just 24 years old back then! The style and color palette remind me of Charles Vess painted pages and than face/expression on panel 6 is definitely Frazetta-esque.

I remember being so utterly blown away by this when it came out and thinking, "THIS is what comics could be!". So beautiful and beyond what was being done in the mainstream. Absolutely gorgeous stuff and still holds up almost 4 decades later!

Had no idea who Hampton even was when these first came out, but I just remember thinking these were some of the most beautiful looking comics I had ever seen. For years, I wanted to get my hands on one of the covers, or (especially) one of those gorgeous pinup paintings he did for back of the issues. But seeing this magnificent page has me thinking that maybe I should break my no panel page rule. That top panel alone is worth the price of admission. Absolutely stunning!

One of the best Hampton paintings that I have seen. It has a nice Vess feel to it.
