DescriptionAnother page from the gorgeous, glorious insanity that was Swamp Thing’s run in with the Parliament of Gears. And here, the eyes have it!I'm madly in love with the depiction/personification of the leering, ghoulish gears and cogs here; impressionism at its finest, but in Mike's beautiful, illustrative style - grounding the setting in reality but still adding menace and sharp edges to absolutely everything. It’s also another example of the innate beauty of Mike's work being effectively used to lull readers into an almost false sense of security (“It’s so pretty!”)… which allows the narrative blow to land even harder when terrifying images and happenings pop out at them. I find it very interesting to look at these three pages together and notice just how much it feels like ‘grinding gears’ jumping from one page to the next. I may very well be reading too much into it, but this is the third of three consecutive pages I have from this book, and none of them feel like they really flow smoothly into the next. It is a thrilling and intensely (deliberately?) jarring narrative ride. It felt like Mike and Ram’s ‘The Swamp Thing’ allowed us to revel in the delight of watching Mike Perkins shift into a whole other gear (?) of his talent each and every month, as he combined pen, ink, wash, paint, blood, sweat, and tears to take his work to whole new levels. I loved his recent ‘Action’ issues and can’t wait to see what he’ll be up to next! Thank you always, Mike and Rubén! (Find more of Mike’s artwork at comicbookartgallery.com !) Social/Sharing |

The art on this series has been next level good. Perkins has cemented his status as one of the best comic book artists of the 21st century.

I can't remember when you weren't scared
When I didn't gear for anyone but you
I swear we've been through Swampy inks there is
Can't imagine Ram V things Mike’s missed
Can't imagine anything the two of them can't do
Through the gears, they’ve never let me down
You've turned Levi around
The sweetest page I've found, I've found with Rube
Through the gears, forever been afraid
I've loved this life on page
And I'm so glad I paid duty to you
Through the gears

Another stellar Mike Perkins Swamp Thing page! That last panel is especially intriguing. It looks like the gears have menacing faces with gaping maws (jaws?). Wow!!

That stare, it burns a hole right through you! The eyes definitely have it. I love the way Seamp Thing is tethered in the first panel, looking somewhat helpless, though in the secnd panel it looks like he's fully in control. Bringing the gears to life was such an amazing concept, as Ram and Mike had to take objects that are cold and lifeless and make them appear as living, organic beings. I especially love how Mike moved the camera in, from the 4th to the 5th panel, so we could get a good look at them, up close and personal!

Such an awesome page! Great contrast between the gears and organic textues and forms. Love the mix of hard black and halftones. Every panel is terrific

That close up on his eyes is worth the price of admission alone. Such intensity!

All right, all right. I get it. I started reading this new series and it's been a solid read with some hints that it will get even better the more I read. Perkins is really bringing it.

But Mark, did you first read the two 8-page stories in the Swamp Thing Halloween Spectacular (1st appearance of the new Swamp Thing), followed by the 2-issue Future State: Swamp Thing, which gives the reader the first indication that this is all a proverbial love letter to the Alan Moore run?

I THINK I did but it's been a while. Good thing I paid for that DC subscription service so I can track these stories down. I'm a completist so knowing there were unread stories out there would've eaten at me 😬

Happy to help. Those two books came out in that order anyway, so you may as well read them first. Fyi, the Halloween Spectacular (Spooktacular?) stories bookend the issue. They also take place approx. 70 years apart, but Ram V tied them in together beautifully.

Mike was the perfect choice for Swamp Thing -- his ultra-detailed yet moody artwork was perfect for the story Ram was telling. This is a fabulous page.

Phenomenal page! I am blown away by this page. That middle panel of the Swamp Thing's eyes is eerily expressive! And the introduction of the gears into the scene is totally surreal--Like a Salvador Dali painting!

Man, the faces in the gears...creepy cool stuff! There are a lot of pages from this run out there and it's hard to believe that thought here are a bunch that most of them are SO uniquely awesome! Congrats on another winner from the run, Jason!
