Coming after the 1898 The Spanish-American War, America kicked out the last remaining European powers in the Western Hemisphere and began the policy of building it's own imperialistic world building to protect its interests by direct engagement in foreign affairs. McCay shows this realistically with the wealthy in charge and the labor of mostly minorities on which this is built.
