DescriptionI picked up my first Groo comic in 1989 when I was just 11 years old. That comic and the character left such an impression with me that I became a Groo fan forever. Last year, I became a first time father - welcoming my son Jax to this world. When this Groo piece because available through "Aragones Cartoons" FB page run by Sergio's daughter, Christen, I immediately took it. When she asked if I wanted a dedication, I immediately said yes. For the first time in my art collecting hobby, there was a dedication to my son from the Groo creator himself. If you'd tell that kid who was captivated by Groo in 1989 that sometime in his life he would get an artwork from the creator himself with a dedication to his son - he would probably think you're crazy. Art-wise, I chose this because it was 21 full-figure characters rendered in a 3" x 17" piece. First, I haven't heard of other comic artists doing 3" x 17" pieces. Second, it is just crazy to have Sergio fit this many fully rendered characters plus a (tree and space for a dedication and self caricature) in 51 square inches of comic board real estate! Finally, I entertain myself when I acquire unpublished pieces by digitally coloring them to sort of fantasize what they would look like if published. So here, I did a digital coloring job - and also a couple of other layouts as if it were an imaginary cover. When I shared it in FB, the long-time-but-now-retired Groo colorist Tom Luth commented: "careful you might get drafted as my replacement." I would take that as a compliment. These are all added in the additional images portion - including a picture of Sergio holding the art. **** UPDATE 1/5/2024 **** I just added a an updated imaginary cover for this piece: slightly changing the colors, adding color holds (as this is what the new colorist Carrie Strachan does), and using the latest Dark Horse Groo logo. Enjoy! Social/Sharing |

Wow! Was looking to see if Sergio missed anyone -but looks like he got all the major characters. The only thing he could have added perhaps would be a token dragon and images of Stan,Tom and himself! Love your fantasy cover idea and coloring too!

It looked like Sergio was unfurling a scroll in the photo. This is an extravaganza! As usual, Aragones tells a full story without words as each character has their own personality and motivations in their interactions with each other.
