Q&A with Jovi Neri

Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?

As I've downsized my collection considerably, all that I keep are special in their own way so I have no particular favorite.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I've been reading comics since the early 1980's and prefer mostly DC. I also draw during my spare time and comic art collecting has helped me study the lines of the greats better, so it has actually improved my drawing ability by a lot.

How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

I've been collecting since 2011. I started because of my passion for comics, and was seeing crazy prices for "limited edition" products in the market, such as Air Jordans or slabbed-comic books. So I thought - if I collect comic art then it's not based on a limited run because it will be the only one of its kind in existence!

How do you display/store your collection at home?

I matte them in black borders, frame them in glare free glass , and hang them by my bedroom walls. To me, if the art can't be displayed or there is no room for them, it's better to dispose of them and let someone else enjoy them. Since comic art is historically significant, it deserves to been seen not stored!

What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

I only have three right now actually: 1) A comic strip published or drawn on exactly my birthdate 10/15/1977 2) Any cartoon/gag/caricature/painting published in a golf magazine like Golf Digest or Golf Magazine. 3) Any affordable original cover to a comic with cover date October 1977. ...I'll still need to think of the other two!

The Groo Inferno (1999) Trade Paperback Front and Back Cover by Sergio Aragones
My Groo Grail!

From left to right: Grativo, Pal, Taranto, Drum, Groella, Arcadio, Minstrel, Mulch, Sage, Arba, Dakarba, Groo, Rufferto

This artwork is huge being done on a single 18" x 24" board which Sergio fills out.

Most Groo covers feature a lot of blank space left out for the stats, but this one has the blacks filled out nicely making it a complete image. Not only is this a near complete cast (ok, so Chakaal would have been good if here), they are all drawn so huge.

This is vintage 90's comic art, having been published in 1999 for the compilation done by Dark Horse Comics that reprinted issues 33 to 36 of the Marvel run.

The main image is with stats photoshopped to it. The actual art without the stats is in the additional images section, which can still be appreciated in all its fullness.

I don't think I will ever need another Groo page after this one.

**** UPDATE 7/20/2022 ****

The image of Groo from this cover was also published in other media, particularly in the official Groo website and the official Groo FB page - screen captures of which I collaged and added to the additional images section.

**** UPDATE 1/05/2024 ****

I also found this image was used in a full page ad published twice in Groo: Mightier Than The Sword issues 3 and 4. So I am attaching a scan of that particular page.
