Hell Comics 1971. Ink and blue pencil on 13x18.5" bristol board back cover subscription ad piece has an image area of 12" x 17" and was designed as a full page ad as seen but was cut and reconfigured to fit "Dopin' Dan" strip by Ted Richards. Ad features unlicensed images of The Phantom Blot, Pegleg Pete, Old Sylvester, The Big Bad Wolf w/Donald Duck in his hand (all looking very tyrannical) while burning Disney comics and Mickey Mouse ducking a knife at bottom. Ad has aged glue on right and bottom borders showing how it was cut and pasted to show as printed. Of interest is that word "Subscriber" on coupon has white-out on "Sub" and is how it printed on back cover. It currently displays as full page ad with bottom two art paste-ups and title loose as moved. Two type paste-ups that were added when cut "And Always Remember, Kids..Politics Is Pigshit!!" and "Sprung" are not present. This rare piece has been in the collection since the 1970s. Part of a historic underground issue. VG.. The story behind Air Pirate Funnies was documented in Bob Levin's 2003 book, The Pirates and the Mouse: Disney's War Against the Counterculture. It began with cartoonist Dan O'Neill, who recruited Bobby London along with several other San Francisco artists to produce two issues of a satirical Underground comic book, using Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. Disney wasted little time bringing the Air Pirates gang to court, and the lawsuit went on for years (it was finally settled out of court). London got picked by O'Neill to do the cover to issue #1, which featured a version of Mickey swiped from a Big Little Book, "Mickey Mouse The Mail Pilot"; only on London's cover, that wasn't mail Mickey was hauling! London, of course, went on to fame as a National Lampoon and Playboy cartoonist and artist on the Popeye newspaper strip. Charles Lippincott Collection.
