DescriptionThis page is from a Marvel black and white magazine devoted to our jolly green giant. It was quite a good (if somewhat underrated) series. As you can see from this page, the judicious use of ink wash made up quite a bit for the absence of color. This is a particularly striking page which contains not only the Hulk but also other members of the Avengers as well (including Iron Man in his yellow armor (a particular favorite of mine), the Wasp, Ant Man and the Mighty Thunder God). Splendid pencils by the redoubtable and ever reliable Sal Buscema and inks by Rudy Mesina (who worked in Filipino comics before availing Marvel comics of his talents as an inker as well as letterer on many Marvel titles). In addition to the wonderful artwork, there is a wistful nostalgic feel to this page. Social/Sharing |

This is my favourite issue of Rampaging Hulk, for obvious reasons, I think. This is one of the best pages in the story, not only for the pulse-pounding action, but for the quality character content as well. Not only does the page offer a money shot featuring the entire original Avengers team in a classic "running towards the reader" pose, but it's followed up by a second money shot featuring a classic Hulk vs Thor battle and I haven't even mentioned all the wonderful things going on in al lthe other panels!

Many thanks as always, Rubén! I can always count on you and Marcus to always comment with an insight and passion that comes from a real love and knowledge of the hobby. Thanks so much for augmenting my description immeasurably and with great eloquence as well as insight.

The whole page is quite splendid in terms of nostalgia during the heyday of The Hulk TV show. It was meant to be distributed where magazines are sold and it introduce new audiences to the Marvel Universe of characters. This does so in a major way to bring in the Avengers in battle when Hulk was the A-List star.

Many thanks, Marcus! All my observations in response to Rubén's comment apply equally to you. And thank you for this additional insight as well.

Thanks so much, Miki! Yes, I agree that Sal was doing some of his best work at that time. The inking by Rudy Mesina is great too.

That was a superb issue. Sal's pencils often suited Filipino inks, like with Steve Gan in Skull the Slayer. The raw savagery of the Hulk really comes across, and the explosive third panel is exceptional. Fabulous page.

Many thanks, Paul, for your very perceptive observations! The Filipino artists were wonderful artists and, when inking, provided such lush inks. Alfredo Alcala comes readily to mind for his work on Conan.

Wow! I mean, how much action and awesomeness can an artist fit on a page?? Apparently a ton! And I love the art wash effects. No need for color here! This is a really beautiful page, congrats!!

Many thanks, Paul! I absolutely agree with the ink wash effects. It not only served the purposes required for the black and white magazine but is an added visual bonus for the original art itself.

Thanks so much, Dave! I hadn't realized that you had a page from this book as well - and Hulk vs Hulk at that! That is an awesome page indeed! Many congratulations!

All the best about Hulk stories with extra rampage! I love b&w art made for b&w publications. Mesina's tonal washes are superb, and all the art is cleanly visible without the occasional muddied pitfalls that can come from the coloring process. Excellent page!

Many thanky, Jeff! And, if I may say so, you make an excellent point about the attractiveness of black and white magazines (particularly to original art collectors such as ourselves inasmuch as what we have is what everyone sees as well).
