DescriptionAstro City started with several one-shot stories before embarking upon a mini-series in issues #4-9 of its second volume. The topic: Batman, or rather his Astro-analogue The Confessor, a figure of the night, skulking amongst the stone gargoyles adorning Grandenetti Cathedral. As he often did, Kurt Busiek told this tale from the perspective of a non-powered newcomer, in this case Confessor's new protégé Choir Boy. On this page, Confessor and Choir Boy face off against Gunslinger, an Old West themed villain like Terra Man, but with a Vietnamese twist integral to the plot. His futuristic-looking guns fire regular old bullets (as shown by the BLAM BLAM sound effect on the previous page), which prove ineffective against Confessor. Panel One may be the most iconic shot in the whole story, as Confessor shields Choir Boy with his body. The hands in the third panel are rendered as speed lines as Confessor crushes the guns. Superhuman invulnerability, strength, and speed. What could it mean? Gunslinger's preposterous calf rockets, impossible to steer in real life, recall other equally disastrous devices like Wonder Man's belt pack or Adam Strange's jet backpack. For whatever reason, this page from Astro City was drawn on a much thicker, stiffer piece of Bristol board than usual. They're all 11x17 though. Prices from bygone years festoon the upper right corner, a reminder of happier days for collectors. A notation on the bottom margin reads "Color: Night with stars." The published page in the additional images shows how this was implemented with a computerized gradient, as the glare of the night city fades into the sky. Social/Sharing |
