DescriptionOne of my personal favorite animation cels, here's something that almost classifies as a "lost clip" from the second season Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Fred Wolf Films) episode "The Mean Machines." This TMNT cel should have appeared in the closing seconds of the episode, where Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Splinter, and April O'Neil are disturbed during a pizza feast in the sewer lair. All the heroes scramble to turn around to face the apparent new threat, only to discover it's Michelangelo playing with a toy robot. However, due to an odd animation error in every publicly available version of the episode, the intended frames are not present and the animation freezes on previously seen frames until the next clip. This multi-layered cel shows the frames that never made it to the finished episode! Leo and Don are on the top cel layer, and Raph and April on the bottom cel layer. Unfortunately, Splinter's frame must have used yet another cel layer and was not included here. The table in this cel is noticeably different from the one in the episode, and I think the tables and seats are part of the printed background, not another cel layer.I've also got another cel layer of a few frames later! This is a painted acetate cel layered over background print. In this case, the the supplied background is slightly different than the episode context (looks like the sewer lair training room), but it does match the general context. These cels were sold framed in mats and protective plastic sleeves at various toy and department stores throughout the early 1990s under the "Animation Art" label. This cel was scanned inside a sealed plastic sleeve, so the image clarity suffers a bit. Also attached is a screencap from the digital VUDU copy, showing the approximate point where the cels should have appeared sometime around the early 21 minute mark. Social/Sharing |

Very fun piece to have so many characters together at once. Bonus material makes it even more unique.
