DescriptionThis is story page 01 of 03 but in the book it is page 23 from the Charlton comics line, 1972.Top Cat was a Hanna-Barbera cartoon that I used to watch in the 1960's. Was it awesome? Not really... but I still loved it and rarely missed it. The main character and leader was Top Cat and he had a gang of 5 other cats: Choo-Choo, Benny the Ball, Brain, Spook, and Fancy-Fancy. Each had their own unique style and personality that helped Top Cat's schemes to make money or trick. If you grew up in that era, you would know the voice and behavior of Top Cat was emulating Phil Silvers, a popular television comedian of the day. The following was taken from Wikipedia about the Top Cat cartoon: "Animation historian Christopher P. Lehman says that the series can be seen as social commentary. The cats may represent disenfranchised people confined to living in a poor environment. Top Cat's get-rich-quick schemes are efforts to escape to a better life. The gang faces a human police officer who frustrates their efforts and keeps them trapped in the alley.[5] This enforcement of the social order by police ensures that the cats will not escape their current living conditions. Co-creator Bill Hanna said it was one of the wittiest and most sophisticated shows he produced with a rare appeal to audiences of all ages." DAAANG! My 8-year-old self never picked up on THAT! In the description of the next page, I'll share some information about Charlton Comics. Social/Sharing |

The cartoon may have been average but the theme song playing for the start and end was very memorable. The cast was a bit large as well for you to remember all of them. This title page is a fun premise and 70's kids would have had a lot of fun seeing Top Cat on TV and in comics.

If only they wore socks. Imagine the possibilities.

Like The Flintstones being based on The Honeymooners, Top Cat was based on Phil Silvers Sgt Bilko show-- I always thought it was pretty funny.

By mentioning the correlation between the Flintstones and Honeymooners and between Top Cat and Sgt. Bilko, you are putting yourself into my age category. It is doubtful most in our hobby know enough about those to understand. But I LOVE it! You are my people! I can still hear the voices of Benny, Brain, and Officer Dibble in my head.
Thank you for the post
