DescriptionStar Wars: Mace Windu - Jedi Of The Republic #5 Pg. 1. Pencils/Art by Denys Cowan. Written by Matt Owens.Starting off 2023 with the last of the holiday care package gifts I received from my good buddy Jeff Wedding - thanks again Jeff, always too generous to me. My first and only Denys Cowan piece and from the Mace Windu book to boot which I wanted an example from and only recently got around to reading (enjoyed it). I believe there also may be blue line inked pages out there by the inker on the book Roberto Poggi but I'm not sure about this specific page per say. Happy New Year and hope you all find what you're looking for in collecting and beyond this year. Social/Sharing |

It's interesting to see - as the inks probably digital(?). At first I would have guessed prelim based on the looseness of the pencils. Imagine if the older generation could do this. The beauty here is that you can see the raw energy the artist put on the paper. Big Congrats!

there are blue line inked pages that exist for this issue I believe (Jeff posted one to his own gallery of page 7 from this issue) but yes for sure interesting to see. def feels more like a layout than detailed pencils but the energy is def there as you say!

Denys has been a pro for at least 40 years, so he IS the older generation! By the way, this level of finish was actually very common up until the 1980's. This was necessary so the inker could have it open enough to interpret their way and be able to add their own flair to the work as well. It was only beginning in the 1990's that the pencillers began to trend towards pencilling super tight, in order to "force" inkers to not be able to really change the finished look of the pencils, because the tighter the pencils, the more the inker is essentially forced to just trace the exact lines that are there. Great looking art, kudos on getting this nice gift from the ever so generous Jeff Wedding!

Great action scene! And you know I like some Cowan. His scratchy style really works for the SW world and this scene! Congrats!

Great action page from an enjoyable series. I hope we get to see more Jedi action from Cowan in the future.
