DescriptionYeah, the Sgt. Rock images are all that detailed. In fact, other than the bad guy mashing a button really gets much detail, but this page still has so much energy and action. I mean, look at it. EVERY PANEL is action packed and moves the story along. And those last three vertical panels really nail the sense of height and distance.I was thinking about the relevancy of comics like this. The book for this page was published in 1977. WW II ended in 1945. That was just a 35 year span. When you think about it, that wasn't that long so there were still lots of people that had strong memories and emotions about it. Parents or relatives or friends likely were involved and either killed or injured. So I can certainly see why books like this and "Our Army At War" and other military books had a strong following. When I think back to 20 and 30 years ago, I don't really think there is a book that would be as relevant. A comic run about surviving a recession? The housing bubble bursting? All kidding aside, maybe some cold-war stories. But is there an audience for that? Anyway... I am so thrilled to have this great Elias/Tanghal Sgt. Rock page as part of my collection. They did do 9-11 related stories in comics, but didn't want to seem exploitative by continuing with them while the war on terror didn't officially end until we called them home. The war comics may have faded in part because of video games like Call of Duty which are as immersive as these comics were back in the day.
