The Patchwork Man "Night of the Rat"

Back in November 1976, DC decided to re-tool House of Secrets and give it a lead series beginning with its 140th issue. The main feature was to be The Patchwork Man. Written by Gerry Conway with art by Nestor Redondo (who were, at the time, the creative team on Swamp Thing). Someone got cold feet though and House of Secrets was put on hiatus. It returned a few months later with HOS #141, and the usual one-shot mystery stories had returned.

In anticipation of being the main feature a second Patchwork Man story, "Night of the Rat" by Conway and Redondo, had been completed but never published. It first saw print in 1983--in the Finnish comic, Gigant #3 (published by Semic). It was published again in 2019 in the HOUSE OF SECRETS: THE BRONZE AGE OMNIBUS VOL. 2.

A great and unique title page from 1977 that remained unpublished in the US for 42 years.

It was bascially DC's version of Frankenstein's monster that they could copyright and trademark. Having Redondo's art made the art timeless as he could illustrate horror comics with the best of them. 1976 or 1983, the work still resonates even for today's audiences.

I really like how he designed the page, with the title/credits splitting the two panels and I especially love that Redondo felt the need to add a detailed illustration of a rat to go along with the title, it's a nice touch! Thanks also for including all the scholarship regarding publication.
