Description

Latest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #148, drawn by returning contributor Craig Shepard, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case the Ross Andru/Franbk Giacoia cover to X-Men #36 (attached in the comments for comparison).

Title: "Metal Fatigue!"

Story: In issue #144, Johnny Quick, Robotman, Liberty Belle and Firebrand were suspended from the All-Star Squadron, only for the Perisphere to be attacked by a group of super-villains, leading to it being destroyed! In the aftermath of the attack, a dropped note revealed the sites for more attacks, and Hawkman coordinated other Squadron members to prevent them.

This time - Johnny Thunder, having misunderstood the message from Hawkman, turns up at the Perisphere, and the JSA's Chairman (somewhat exasperated by his team-mate) tells Johnny to stand guard over Belle, Johnny, Robotman and Firebrand while he flies off into central Manhattan to stop an attack on the Empire State Building!

When Hawkman arrives, he finds fellow JSA member Dr Mid-Nite battling Metalo on the highest level of the giant skyscraper, as Tarantula is hurled from the building! The All-Star catches himself with a line from his web-gun, and scrambles back upwards, just as Metalo is preparing to throw Charles McNider over the edge as well!

Hawkman swoops down to catch his comrade, and from the corner of his eye sees Wonder Woman on the street below, who bursts into the building and races up the stairs to the roof, where she confronts Metalo, and a test of strength ensues. As Wonder Woman is about to prevail, a fifth hero arrives - Sargon The Sorcerer, riding on his magic carpet - and the Amazon Princess is temporarily distracted, allowing Metalo to shift his stance and use the power of his armoured suit to topple Wonder Woman.

As Wonder Woman teeters on the edge of the Empire State Building, Hawkman catches her wrists and saves her - and Sargon soars in, touching Metalo's armour and ordering it to freeze solid --- but nothing happens!

(We know, but Sargon doesn't, that at the exact same moment, Dr Fate is instructing Margo the Magician to tap into the power of the Ruby Of Life and immobilise the Blue Lama - and this temporarily diverts Sargon's magical abilities and leaves him unable to affect Metalo's armour.)

The last-minute reprieve allows Metalo to pummel Sargon into unconsciousness, and he starts to flee - until a frustrated Hawkman uses his mace to hammer at the villain, halting him for long enough for a blackout bomb from Dr Mid-Nite to blind him, a web-line from Tarantula to trip him over, and a haymaker punch from Wonder Woman to knock him out!

As the villain slowly returns to consciousness, he laments the failure of the plan, claiming that the other villains were supposed to come to his aid --- but the All-Stars' attempts to question him further are interrupted by a shocking message coming to them over their radios - a message that will be revealed in the next issue!

The cover art defintiely elevated the comic and the layout does its magic here as well.  The character swap outs work out great.
