DescriptionMy first Hulk art of 2023.This issue made a big impression on me when it came out. There weren't any Internet spoilers back in 1988 and this came right after the shocking climax to the Ground Zero storyline. The Hulk didn't actually appear in this issue apart from flashbacks, but it featured his supporting cast trying to make sense of it all. This page is part of a short epilogue, where the Leader is basically gloating that he got away with it. The issue also introduced me to the art of Erik Larsen, who I thought was a great fit for the Hulk, but this just turned out to be a fill in issue before moving on to Spider-Man. Thanks to Erik Larsen for providing the following info: "Todd McFarlane drew layouts on 8½ x 11 typing paper, so his actual pencil never touched this 11 x 17 Bristol art board. Todd's layouts were destroyed in the East Bay Firestorm in 1991 along with my house and numerous other originals. I don't knnow if Todd (or Marvel) has any copies of his layouts on file but I don't." The General in the second panel was drawn on a paste-up. I've included a scan of the original version which I was able to get by shining a light on the art and taking a photo from the back. Fun page! The hideousness of the Leader's design is a great update giving him more of a horror edge than just a puny big brain.

This entire issue was pencilled in eight days while I was working at DC on the Doom Patrol. A few months later I moved over to Marvel on my first regular asignment, the Punisher.

I really enjoyed your Doom Patrol work, Erik. I was and still am a massive Steve Lightle fan and at first I found the stylistic differences to be jarring. But once I realized Lightle wasn't returning to the book anyway, I really got into your run. By the way, most people are aware of the fire that took your home and art, but did you ever attempt to sit down an make an inventory of the pages you lost, for your own benefit or simply for historic purposes? Any idea how many total pages were lost?
Fun early page, Ted, kudos on getting it. Love the Leader images.

I made an accounting at the time for insurance purposes. I don't recall everything. It's not easy to remember it all. I'm sure it was hundreds of pages ofmy own work as well as pages by Steve Ditko (Machine Man), Walter Simonson (X-Factor), Gil Kane (various, including hundreds of Star Hawks layouts), José Luis García-López (Teen Titans), George Pérez (Fantastic Four, Teen Titans), Ross Andru (Superman Vs. the Amazing Spider-Man), Todd McFarlan (Infinity Inc.), Rob Liefeld (Hawk and Dove) and others.
Thankfully, there were no Kirby pages in my possession yet.

You always did have great taste in artists, so as tough as it is to know what other art you lost aside from your own, I think we can agree that the one shining light is that YOU are still here to tell about it. I gotta admit though, I'm surprised to know that you still hadn't begun picking up Kirby art by that point in time!

Nice storytelling, particularly how that reaching hand is breaking panel in the second! Congrats!

I remember as a kid being a bit freaked out by this version of the Leader. Great page from a fun period for the title.
