Description

Continuing with pieces from great runs from the early 2000s, at least IMO – first was Quitely New X-Men, then Bagley Ultimate Spider-Man, and now the late great Mike Wieringo on Fantastic Four!

I’ve never been a dedicated FF reader – have read some runs here and there, but once I found this book, albeit late, I was ALL about it. Started with issue 69, a couple parts into the Doom-centric arc “Unthinkable”, and I quickly went back to the start of the run with issue 60. Just straight FUN comics – the combo of Waid/Wieringo/Kesel was a perfect pairing with Marvel’s first family. Seamlessly wove in the lightness, humor, darker moments (more on that in sec!), etc, and yes, the fantastic :) Really enjoyed the team’s characterizations. As well as Doom’s. Speaking of which…

This page is from the prologue to “Unthinkable”, and is an all Doom issue. Gets into his history, and by issue end he gets a power upgrade of the sorcery bent in prep for another round with Reed and the FF. I won’t get into detail but it’s some sinister stuff, and original. Definitely some good reading. Here, we get an origin retelling. Doom’s uber ego and concurrent insecurity, the latter stemming from the “marginally bright” Richards :) And that bottom left panel – a nice homage to FF #278 by John Byrne. See additional images. The closer was that last panel: “…to no end.” Always so close yet always so far.

And excuse the image. Had to take a pic as the pencils were too light for my scanner. I usually don't buy pencil only art unless I can get the published inks alongside, or vice versa, but had to make an exception here. I did check with Karl Kesel about the blue line inks, but alas he had sold them a long while back. If anybody’s got a line, let ME know! Thanks!

I see it in the mirror
I feel it in pencils
Scars they’re all around me
And angry feeling grows

It's written from back then
To be Unthinkable, oh yes it is
So if you really love these
Pencils by Wieringo, oh

You know I love Doom, I always will
My mind's made up by this page that I feel
There's no bargaining, there'll be no friends
'Cause artwork love Doom can depend

I see my face before me
As displayed on my head
I kinda get to thinking
Of all that brings Reed death, oh yes I do

You gave your promise to Reed and I gave mine to you
I need some fun beside me in everything I Doom
Oh, yes I Doom

You know I love Doom, I always will
My mind's made up by Mark Waid that I feel
There's are the scarring, there'll be no end
'Cause hate from Doom you can depend

I gotta keep improving

Ooh, it's written way back when
Drawn by Mike Wieringo, yeah, ooh yeah
So if you really love these, love these, love these
Come on it’s all pencils
Come on and let it show
Come on and let it
Come on and let it
Come on it’s Wieringo
Come on and let it show
Come on and let it
Come on and let it
Come on it’s Wieringo
Come on and let it show, baby
Come on and let it show

Ha ha, yes!  You had me from the first verse!  Outdone yourself again, Marcus the MAESTRO!  How do you keep doing it?!  It's almost...unthinkable ;)  Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

I also own a page of pencils from this run, and also tried to find out if the inks were available.  I heard through the grapevine that my particular issue's inks were sold as a complete issue, so unlikely that it would be broken up. (Not that I would want to see such a fate befall a complete issue of anything)

Possibly the same with this page's inks?

Yup, I think that might be the case.  Complete issues ink sales happened more than once, I'm told.  And I hear ya regarding breaking up the issue, BUT, if ever current owner decides to do it...I'm HERE!  :)  Thanks, Andrew.  And just looked at your page - outstanding!  Congrats on a suh-weet example!

This was a super fun FF run (one of my all-time favorites) with great stories and fantastic art.  Good call on the lower left panel!  I don't know how you make those kinds of connections.  Bravo!!

Great done-in-one example from the GOAT FF run. And one of the few classic Doom costume shots, since Unthinkable changed his design to reflect his newfound mastery of sorcery. Just this and the later Spidey and FF series with images of original recipe Doom. I've eyed this one many a time on CAF- congrats!

Soooooo CLEAN! I wasn't a fan of Wieringo when this came out, not because I disliked his work in particular, but because I didn't like the cartoonier artistic styles in general back then. I've since grown an appreciation for them though, especially from a technical point of view and I really love seeing stuff like this now. It looks like a storyboard for an animated show. So crisp and clean (and no caffeine. Hah ha ha, 7-up!). Big up!

Nice to see a good finished pencils page. I feel like this type of style is much more accepted these days, great energy.

Agreed that this was a great run and you've got a nice Doom centric page here.

The Waid/Wieringo run was a high point in FF storytelling for me too. I basically read this book on autopilot in the early years but their run was when this moved to the top of the pile for me every month. Wieringo was an immaculate story-teller and the perfect foil for Waid.

I'm proud to say that I wrote a letter in protest to Marvel when Bill Jemas planned to remove Waid and Ringo from Fantastic Four to make room for Aguirre-Sacasa and McNiven.  Crazy times.  Loved this issue and love this page!

I salute you on making that effort, Michael!  It's not like there's anything against Aguirre-Sacasa and McNiven but we KNEW something special was going on with Waid/Wieringo's run - why not keep it rolling?!  Thanks for the add, man!

That bottom middle panel could've been a cover. I thought you did pretty well capturing the image with your phone.

Fantastic piece, K!  Waid and Wieringo's run on 'Fantastic Four' was one of my primary loves back in the early 2000s, and this issue right here was the turning point where the light and breezy stories of the first part of the run were replaced by darker and heavier fare for the rest of the run, all springing from (and building upon) the events of this arc.  (One fo my favorite memories is of telling two of my friends about this issue and its twist ending, and leaving them with their mouths hanging open is disbelief...  Great stuff! :) ).  Doom may feel like he always comes up short of destroying the Richards family outright, but he seems unable to register how truly close he comes on occasion, and I feel this run was one such occasion.  And a Doom flashback is always awesome - especially from his POV!  Gorgeous, clean, classic Wieringo artwork (really love that panel 4) - beautiful pick up, K!  Congrats!

Definitely the issue where things took a turn!  And I HAVE to think your 2 friends were comic fans, right?!  Hard to think they'd have the mouth agape reaction if not :)

And Doom...he's all or nothing, man.  Coming close doesn't count.  I have the Vol 1 hardcover and it starts out with Waid's manifesto, and here's one of the lines when he's talking about Doom:  "Regardless of whom he's evaluating, there are only two measurements on Victor von Doom's yardstick of success: Best and Worthless."

Yup :)  Thanks for the add, man!
