DescriptionIn my first year and a half of OA collecting, I showcased art from higher profile indie creators like Jaime Hernandez, Peter Bagge, Seth, and Simon Hanselmann. This year, I'm making a deliberate effort to add art from talented "indie" creators who deserve a wider audience.Sammy Harkham has been a cartoonist for years but achieved his greatest prominence as an editor of the innovative Kramers Ergot anthology. After 14 years working on the project, he recently completed his epic Blood of the Virgin, which follows an immigrant film editor named Seymour in 1970s Los Angeles who is desperate to make his own movies. Expect Harkham's profile to rise later this year when Penguin Random House publishes the collected Blood of the Virgin. Harkham's gifts as a cartoonist, page designer, and humorist are on full display on this inside front cover from his self-published anthology Crickets, where Blood of the Virgin was originally serialized. I love the mix of house ads and pandemic era satire. Size: 11 x 15 Social/Sharing |

Super dense in the cartooning and storytelling by compacting so much information of four separate stories. It's is an approach from an outsider indie artist to use as much of the real estate as possible as an opportunity to get published doesn't come easy!

Fantastic. Love the lettering. Afraid to say I've only read bits and pieces but excited for it all to be collected.

"Eat shit you fucking Zionist! Slap!" 😆 😆 😆
I have to admit, I did NOT see that coming and when I finally did, I laughed my ass off. That was a wonderful payoff! I really love the hand drawn Crickets title mast, too, really great.

A ton of fun!
Harkham is so influenced by old newspaper cartoonists like Segar, King and Crane, especially since the BotV serial started in Crickets, that it's great that this page let's him showcase his style in a format similar to those of his influences.

Cool Indie work from Sammy Harkham. I'm not familiar with his work, but this makes me think I should be. Love the simple style contrasted with the heavy thoughts. Thanks for sharing!
