Description

I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying that everyone reading this description probably loved the Comics Section of their respective local newspapers when you were kids. When I came down for breakfast, I’d snatch out that section with a quickness, and I always skipped to one strip first. It took place in a world that reflected ours with a funhouse mirror, filled with insane characters and razor-sharp satire. It was wheelchair spaceships carrying its crew to the furthest reaches of imagination, monsters under your bed that wanted to talk about Henry Kissinger and make pattern baldness, Steve “Me Too Prototype” Dallas and his band of talking animals with bad attitudes and even worse credit, and it was packed with more pop culture references than you could shake a Ronco Pocket Salad Launcher at…a place called Bloom County.

The cast of characters in this long-running strip was amazing, and I loved them all, but one stood furry and tall above the others for me. From the heights of rocking his electric tongue for millions of fans to the lows at the bottom of a bag of catnip, one character never failed to make me laugh: Bill the Cat. This was Berke Breathed’s drug-addicted, womanizing, philosophizing, jazzercizing satirical response to another popular cartoon cat at the time, Garfield. The Betty Ford/ Billy and the Boingers/ Paparazzi storyline was one of my absolute favorites, so to get a Bill focused daily from that arc brings me right back to my childhood joy. Bill said it best, really.

“Oop ack. Ack thbbbt. Blech!”

Words to live by, Bill. Thank you, Carsten.

It is told that Bill is Garfield's son, but feline rumors say he's actually Fritz's. Great strip, amazing character!

Cats have the bizarre ability to have a litter of kittens with more than one father, so we may never know! Heck, it could even be Streaky...

I have to admit, I didn't find the strip very funny, but in fairness, no humor strips ever really made me laugh. I thought many had cleverly written jokes, but they just didn't make me laugh. Cue the Simpsons: "It's funny, but it's just not hah hah funny.". However, I still really loved Bloom County if only for the the interesting looking cast of characters and the excellent cartooning. Like you, Bill the Cat was my favourite and he was the only one whose head I would doodle constantly. To this day, whenever I hear or see that there's a Bloom County original going up on the auction block, I always check it out in hopes that it might be an example featuring Bill the Cat. Congrats, man, this is a phenomenal example!

It is a lot of subtle US pop culture and political reference, so the humor could hit a bit flat for some audiences. It usually made me laugh, tho, like when Milo would work with his editor or Binkley dealt with his night terrors. It's so funny that you used to doodle Bill the cat, because I used to do that, too. Heh. Thanks, Rubén.

Fantastic example from this classic strip!  Great comedic execution here, IMHO.  This takes me back

A great classic of its day that gave us a snapshot of the 80's.  The dry humor made you think of the truth behind the joke.  In this case, it's about glorifying the decadent lifestyle reported by tabloids and seen on movie screens.

It was most certainly a good list of what not to do. :) Thank you, Marcus

Read the comic strips from the paper as kids?!  Darn tootin' we did!  Nice throwback feel, no doubt!  Congrats, J!

Well, as I live and Breathe(d)!!  Yowza, J H - This is absolutely DIVINE!  Like you, I was -madly- passionate about this strip, and having a great example like this from the Boingers storyline could only be surpassed by somehow getting your hands on the master tapes of the recording session(s) which produced the tune on the flexi-disc insert of the 'Billy and the Boingers Bootleg' book... :)

But what a beautiful example here, from the prime of the strip, which sports a great gag, that unmistakable Breathed narrative voice (full of wit and wry social commentary), and beautiful shots of Bill.  Absolutely spectacular, J H!  Mega-congrats!

That record! It has been years. I still have my copy, too, and I'm going to play it today thanks to you, Jason. :) I still laugh at gags that I'll recall reading as a kid. Old, bald Binkley coming out of the night terror closet to have a frank discussion about how lame "we're" gonna be with women? Then comes out the first girlfriend to sit on his bed with a monster peeking out to see his reactions? I'm chuckling right now. And I very well remember reading this one, too. We recapture tiny bits of our youth with each of these personal treasures we find. Thanks for the great comment as always, Jason!

Always enjoyed reading Bloom County, and this is a great example of the strip. Especially for us fans of Bill the Cat. He brightened a lot of our days in the 80s. Congrats on the great pick-up!
