DescriptionKeepin’ the BP post train rollin’ with this late ‘80s beaut by the genius Gene Colan! When I picked this up, there were 5 names on my BP OA list I was left to check off. Colan was one, and I lucky to nab this as well as a piece by another on the list, from a fellow collector. So, as of writing this, I’m down from 5 to 3. Don’t get me wrong, I plan to keep picking up BP art, but I’m now down to the final 3 on the “official” list!Colan, man…just a master of gestural figure work. He’s absolutely up there amongst the best. I found his work later, but the more I’ve looked at OA over the years the more I’m impressed with how he incorporates layout, composition, and that SPLENDID figure work to give us some of the most dynamic storytelling we’ve seen in comics. I think of DD first but stoked to have his treatment of BP from the Panther’s Quest run printed in MCP. Here, the transition from panel 2 to 3 to 4 I just love. Gun cocked, but the Panther swiftly pounces, and it’s done. Straight kicking dude out of the panel while simultaneously snatching his gun. Then, the dialogue. The King teaching a lesson – one dude won’t soon forget. And those gritty Colan lines accentuated by common collaborator Tom Palmer’s sublime inks! Have a Tomb of Dracula Colan page with Blade and now glad I got BP checked! Stay tuned as another gets checked off the BP list, next from the ‘90s! Social/Sharing |

What a great three-panel sequence there in the middle! Gene Colan is definitely a master of figure drawing and exciting story telling. Congrats on another terrific BP piece!

Woooow - what a fantastic Colan Panther page! That top tier is great, setting the action up perfectly, and then that second tier is home run central, with the Panther breaking through the panel wall - in all three panels!! (I also love that the poor slob that cushions his blow is knocked into three different panels over two different page "elevations", too :) ). Not the "hornhead" that Colan is most famous for drawing, but this sure suits him and looks GREAT! HUMONGOUS congrats on grabbing such a strong example of one fo your "top 5"! Terrific add, K!

Wow. I've never thought of BP as another "hornhead" lol but it works. Yeah, that guy getting WHUCTed (is that the term/sound effect for 3 panel break?!) looks like he's literally about to fall of the page :) And just to clarify, not 100% sure who's in my BP top 5, at least yet, but Colan was one of 5 on the checklist I had yet to check. But with this and another, now down to 3! Thanks, Jason, and all, for the comments!

One less bell to answer...
One less piece to buy
One Colan my pick Black Panther
I should be happy
But all I do is buy
(Try, buy, no more Panther)
Oh, I should be happy
(Oh, where have they sold?)
I only know that since three left
My Van Der Merwe
Though I try to now get
Like vibranium
Each time Tom Palmer inks
I still run (I still run)
I don't know how in the world
To stop thinking of him
'Cause I still love him so
(Love him so)
He ends each page the way I start out
Bidding, go all out

"I should be happy but all I do is buy" Lol!
I do sit myself down at times and try and take the collection in, and be good and happy with what I already got. Especially the more recent pick ups! As opposed to jumping RIGHT back into the hunt. I'm pretty good about it. Fairly good. Not bad. ;) And I try not to lament "where have they sold?" :)
Thanks, Marcus!

It's interesting that you mention DD because to me, the figure layout in panels 3 & 4 could have been your typical Colan aerial DD. Great page.

Those three center panels are like a ballet of violence. Colan's work is still fondly remembered for a reason - pages like this one. An incredible addition to your already spectacular BP collection.

Gene Colan is one of my all-time favourite artists and even at this point in his career, was still capable of banging out amazing work. I love how he moves the camera around throughout the page and provides that classic, dynamic figure work he was known for. The Panther at his best!

I get why he's a fave of yours, Ruben. Again, a lot of his work is before my time, but I don't think there's another artist, when I look back, that I'm more wowed by in terms of action scene storytelling. And a lot of that has to do with his camera angle changes throughout a page, like you note! Definitely glad to have a nice example, expecially featuring BP. Thanks!

Beautiful page by one of my all time favorite art teams! Colan masterfully moves figures around the page in that middle 3 panel sequence and shows that even though he possesses all the dynamism of traditional Marvel storytelling he still retains the style that made him so unique among his silver age peers. Congrats on another great addition to your epic BP collection!

You said it perfectly, Chris! As you say, honors the house style but with his own unique spin! Glad you like, and thanks for the comment!
