Description

* Originally published as page 8 in Crickets #5

To mark this week's publication of Sammy Harkham's Blood of the Virgin (Pantheon Books), I'm presenting this page from the book, which collects the story published over the last decade plus in the pages of Harkham's Crickets comic.

Already well-known in independent comics circles, Blood of the Virgin will be the book that establishes Harkham's well-deserved place among the top cartoonists of his generation.

From the publisher's synopsis of Blood of the Virgin:

Set primarily in Los Angeles in 1971, Blood of the Virgin is the story of twenty‑seven‑year‑old Seymour, an Iraqi Jewish immigrant film editor who works for an exploitation film production company. Sammy Harkham brings us into the underbelly of Los Angeles during a crucial evolutionary moment in the industry from the last wheeze of the studio system to the rise of independent filmmaking.

Seymour, his wife, and their new baby struggle as he tries to make it in the movie business, writing screenplays on spec and pining for the chance to direct. When his boss buys one of his scripts for a project called Blood of the Virgin and gives Seymour the chance to direct it, what follows is a surreal, tragicomic making-of journey. As Seymour’s blind ambition propels the movie, his home life grows increasingly fraught. The film’s production becomes a means to spiral out into time and space, resulting in an epic graphic novel that explores the intersection of twentieth‑century America, parenthood, sex, the immigrant experience, the dawn of early Hollywood, and, shockingly, the Holocaust.

An Iraqi Jewish immigrant? Man, Seymour sure got the triple whammy! Sounds like a wacky, but fun story!

Wonderful comic timing and such interesting panel choices to enhance the beats.

Love the Jaime Hernandez vibe in the bottom 6 panels, and -really- like how the word balloons are used in that sequence, how their relative sizes convey the urgencies of the one who spoke them (as in panel 7) or how they jostle with one another to underscore the panel's action (as in panel 8).  Yeah - that's some very cool cartooning in what sounds like a unique and singular story!  Nice score, Mark!

Sweet 12 panel grid layout with the need for the big four in one piece to change the whole tone of the page!  Stewing and stewing until things boil over.

Powerful combination of dialogue and panel design. This hits hard like a movie would. Strong piece. Never forget the babysitter money though lol.
