DescriptionNot counting an issue of Marvel Team-Up I got when I was really little, by my estimation, Web of Spider-Man #18 was the first Spider-Man comic I bought from a Thrifty's Spinner Rack with my own money in 1986. Around the very same time, I would have gotten the Wrightson Graphic Novel, Hooky and a month later Amazing Spider-Man #280. These are all defining Spider-Man comics for me, because aside from that Marvel Team-Up and the various cartoons, toys and video games, these were my personal introduction to Spider-Man. He would never be as cool, as funny and as loved, as he would be in these formative introductory issues. For me, this page is one of those lopsided moments, where my personal value skyrocketed, even if the monetary value was still in reach.I loved the Black Costume, and even dressed up as Spider-Man for one Halloween. I knew about the Alien Costume from the 4 panel inserts on the rear of the package of the Mattel Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars action figure, so the 'new' costume was not new or unfamiliar to me as I grabbed issues off the stands. I read this issue off the Spinner Rack, before there ever was such a thing as a 'Venom' (Get off my lawn, you 90s kids with your 90s characters! This was back when Spider-Man was hilarious and Deadpool wasn't even a notion in Rob Liefeld's head yet. I had an Onion on my belt. It was the style at the time.). All I ever knew about the end to this issue was Peter Parker was freaked out because someone nearly pushed him into a moving subway train and his Spider-Sense never went off. Getting comics off the Spinner Rack was somewhat sporadic, but I did read the follow-up in issue #26 where Peter tests out his Spider-Sense and is confident he hasn't lost it. Me? I figured that was the end of that little sub-plot. Conflict resolved. And Scene. Fin. Little did I know I would read an interview with Michelinie years later, where he'd reveal, "Oh that? That was supposed to be Venom." Me: "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!!?!?!" Anyway, this page has plenty going for it, regardless of my "personal value." Silvestri, Baker, MJ, Black Costume, witty banter! If you couldn't tell, I'm pretty over the moon about this page. Social/Sharing |

Well, I think this page is killer, but for a different rerason than you do. I just LOVED Baker's inks at Marvel when he broke in at this time, over aany penciller. Gorgeous stuff and a fun era for Spidey, in all the titles. Thanks for sharing the fun photos, great throwback to your childhood!

You see the world through your Spider-Man eyes
You're a comic art fan I can tell
You've posted all with it calm and well planned
But your hand's wet with sweat and your head needs a rest
And you're cool with yourself when you True Believe it
You're kidding yourself if you just goin' leave it
Why must you be such Silvestri young fan
When your costume looks quite bright to me
How can there be such Michelinie plans
That could hide such Venom, such a caring young man
You're cool with yourself if you True Believe it
You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it
Web up, that black costume's neat
Baker's inks they can't beat and you know it
Come on, let's see art you've got
Just take your snap shot and don't blow it

A gorgeous page from Web of SM! I love the faces and the interaction and so cool to see the black suit in that last panel.

The important thing was that you had an onion on your belt, which was the style at the time. As I recall they didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones. Congrats on the page, and the memories! I'm not crying, it's the onions.

Lol, after all those years - "supposed to be Venom." Ha! Man, can't beat the combo of history, personal nostalgia, and art! Love the costumed Derek pics :) Congrats, man!
