Description

The Witching Hour holds a special place in my heart. It's one of those books that might turn you off the first time through. But if you come back and take a closer look it continues to reveal its treasures over and over. I've returned to this book time and again for the density of the story and concurrent themes... and of course for Chris's insanely beautiful work on every page.

I've had the pleasure of chatting with Chris a few times about the book; about his approach and process in doing the art and just how magical those double-page spreads are. While I haven't been able to nail down one of those beauties quite yet, I jumped at this page the moment I saw it. The book is filled with these kinds of quiet, poignant moments and this piece carries my eye through every panel with ease.

As you can tell, the majority of the pieces in this book are constructed rather than just penciled and inked. Chris liberally used stats for background sets and the lettering is pasted on old-school style. These pages have major texture and are just so fun to look at. As my dad would have said, they just don't make 'em like this anymore!

The scene setting with the city stat followed by those stylized characters in the tradtional panels? Really effective contrast. A visual feast for the eyes! Congrats, Frank!
