DescriptionSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released on December 21 1937, is perhaps one of the most iconic animated cartoons ever produced by Walt Disney. As the first full-length animated cartoon, Snow White is one of Disney’s more recognizable characters even today.Distributed by King Features Syndicate, this Snow White Sunday newspaper comic strip ran for twenty weeks, from December 12, 1937 to April 24, 1938. It actually began nine days prior to the film's colossal premiere at the Cathay Circle Theatre on December 21, 1937 and a whopping month and a half or more before the movie's general public release in February 1938. By the time the film actually appeared in theaters, devoted readers would have already been familiar with the princess, the prince, and the queen. The Sunday comic strip adaptation was written by Merrill de Maris, penciled by Hank Porter, and inked by Bob Grant (only 2 inked Sundays are known to exist). I dare to say this artwork, the middle row of the 14th Sunday is among the top5 from those 60 tiers of artwork Hank Porter penciled, presenting the Old Hag (stunning first panel with the poisoned apple), Snow White, and 6 of the Dwarfs, just 1 missing! Needing to remember also that every 1st tier of those 3-tier Sundays had the story name logo, so there is just an empty panel for that space. Only the 2nd and 3rd tiers were "full", but not always, there are also empty panels, see later link to HA. Of the 20 original inked Sundays only 2 are known to have survived to this day, surprisingly this 14th Sunday (sold by Heritage for 26.290$ in 2013), and the following 15th Sunday. This artwork is huge!! The graphite on paper art has an image area of approximately 27" x 5.5", matted with an overall size even bigger. This artwork is the latest that Heritage Auctions has sold (in 2019), they sold earlier 25 other tiers; you can find almost all of them also here: https://filmic-light.blogspot.com/2015/02/hank-porter-original-snow-white-drawings.html In 2014 Oakauctions sold 4 other tiers (and also this artwork I am having now); https://oakauctions.com/snow-white-and-the-seven-dwarfs---lot2372.aspx And here is 1 more (not sold on either auctions) for sale: https://www.animationartgallery.com/Preliminary-Comic-Strip-of-Snow-White-and-Dopey-p/wds753.htm One nice middle tier was sold Italy in 5/2022 (the previous time in HA in 2012). So, it looks like 50% of the penciled original artwork has survived (30 tiers out of 60), I haven't managed to find any other sales records. There is 3 other tiers presented here in CAF-pages. Additional photos presenting details and interesting prints. The original newspaper page where this Sunday strip was printed (then back March 13 1938). About 2 months later it was published in Finland at Seura magazine (May 10). IDW's Silly Simphonies vol 2 is the latest reprint so far in English (2017). Social/Sharing |
