DescriptionI am a big fan of Frank Godwin and in particular his work on Rusty Riley. I have been fortunate to have some great examples. This is an early one that I recently acquired. That first panel was what sold this. The lighting effect in the second and third panels is well done and there is some Flagg and Raymond in that technique.Social/Sharing |

Just a boy and his dog! Such expression of genuine affection could not have been done any better.

Doesn't look much like a Rusty - but it sure is awesome! Congrats!

Holy cow. Godwin was in the zone on this one. It's almost psychedelic!

I actually love that even in spite of how brilliant Godwin was, he somehow couldn't draw the titular character consistently over the years. Sometimes he looks like a cute 8 year old boy, sometimes like a tall, lanky 16 year old and other times such as in this example, like a 30 year old gangster! The line art and lighting effect throughout is absolutely fabulous.

I don't completely agree with you on Godwin not being able to draw Rusty consistently. I think the changes took place over years in how he rendered him. If you look through random Rusy dailies in no particular order you might get that sense but if you see them in continuity you will see gradual changes in both Godwin's style and approach to the character. The early years of the strip have the most change from try out strips to about 1950. I think the 30 year old gangsters you are seeing are 30 year old gangsters in the second and third panel, I am not sure how the young boy with his dog in the first panel could pass as a 30 year old anything!

Hey, the eyes see what they see! The men in the 2nd and 3rd panels are actually 55 year old gangsters! But yes, I've seen all the Rusty strips out of order via the original art and have only briefly skimmed through the reprints in order of publication. Still, I could be mistaken but I don't think Godwin's intent was to age the characters in real time as in some other strips, was it? I was under the impression that the characters were supposed to be the same age throughout the life of the strip. What does the magic book say?

That first panel is stunning. But so are the others!

As you know, I had quite a collection of Rustys years ago. I would have to say this is probably one of the best ones I had ever seen!
