DescriptionEarly 90s DC was a kinetic time. Lots of launches and relaunches to try to recapture the energy coming out of Crisis in the early 90s. Some efforts, like Vertigo, were hugely successful. Others, like Bloodlines, less so.The Ray mini launched with art by a newcomer, Joe Quesada, showed a ton of promise (which turned out to be more about Quesada than Ray). Christopher Priest then launched an ongoing with another newcomer Howard Porter. The series was the latest attempt by DC to mirror the Spider-Man formula - with Priest's own spin. Porter did a lot to mirror Quesada's aesthetic for the series. The final panel of this page evidence of that. It was a strong effort that never really lived up to the splash of the original mini but that resulted in a lot of great, early Porter art (assisted by Robert Jones). I got this page from Crow331's shop on eBay spring 2023. Social/Sharing |

I'm a huge fan of Quesada's early '90s work in his character designs in particular - most of his designs from that era were quite unique, fresh and with a lot of good contrasting elements. The Ray and Azrael designs still hold up very well to this day. Howard Porter grew into his own unique style through the run of this title and this fantastic page is a great early example of his bold, dynamic page layout !

Fantastic final image of the book to have those who read it want more of what's in store. The negative space and foreshortening lets us fill in the blanks, but there's no mistaking in the smile. Porter's first major series that put him on the map!
