Description

I owned this drawing for over a decade until I sold it to a friend almost 20 years ago. I never wanted to part with any Disney publicity drawings from the 1930s, but I needed money for something and my friend had been wantig some examples for a long time. I did, however, have him promise to sell it back to me if he ever decided to part with it. He has n9 recollection of makin such a promise or of ever even owning it! But, when it turned up in a Heritage action, I had to finally get it back.

As is typical, Heritage misidentified thae nature of this drawing and what it was used for.

1. It was drawn by Manuel Gonzales rather than Tom Wood, as can be determined by the fact that it has red underdrawing and is not drawn solely in black pencll, as is universally used by Wood.

2. It is not a drawing for the Mickey's Elephant Good Housekeeping page, although roughly similar to
an image on the GH page, but is unquestionbly a drawing used for on of the six publicity stills for the cartoon.

This is not brain surgery, but apparently too difficulth for the cataloguer(s) at Heritage!

One more observation. I hate live auctions at Heritage. Their auctioneers go to absurd lengths to draw out the bidding so as to maximize the number of bids. On Sat. June 24, 2023, the first, male auctioneer, who obviously knows close to nothing about animation art, took a huge amount of time nattering nonsense about each lot he was selling. As a result, he took an absurd amount of time before closing each lot and wasted all potential bidders' time, who had to sit around for much longer than they should have to to take care of business. This nonsense did nothing to benefit any serious bidders and, for someone like me, who in no way enjoys spending a whole Saturday watching the sale of a lot of largely mediocre animation art, it was just annoying. The female auctioneer, who is only marginally more knowledgeable, also spent an absurd amount of time "milking" the audience, and often spreading misinformation. When this drawing was being sold, wlth the incorrect attribution to Tom Wood, she, in the middle of the bidding launched into a pointless discussion as to whether this was drawn at the end of Wood's tenure at Disney -- he died in 1940. Not only did she have the wrong artist, but a drawing from 1936 was clearly not done close in time to 1940. But her goal was achieved -- her delay with nonsense caused the bidding to extend far longer than was justified and resulted in a final hammer price that was $1,000 higher than the price for the superior and more valuable drawing from Mickey's Parrot, which was not milked in bidding. I saw several lots that a friend of mine lost out on because the similar, unprofessional delay in closing the bidding on those items. I've never seen such blatant gamesmanship at any of the many actions at Christie's and Sotheby's in which I have bid over the last 40 yea

PS I paid $200 when I first bought this drawing in the early 1980s. It cost 25X that much in 2023, without much change in popularity.
