DescriptionLatest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #228, teaming Batman with the Jester, adapted from the Klaus Janson cover of Daredevil #234, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.1942 - and the War Department asks Batman to look into the deaths of some civilian scientists working on a top-secret military project. When Batman views their corpses, he understands why - their faces have been twisted into grotesque smiles! Travelling to Gotham Penitentary, Batman questions the Joker, but the villain denies any involvement - he may be a criminal, but he wants to see the Allies win the war as much as any other American. The Joker, does, however, suggest that Batman investigate a former member of his gang, who he suspected had stolen a sample of his Joker venom - a gang member who had ties to the Bundists. Meanwhile, policeman Chuck Lane is on the trail of a small-time crook believed to have been involved in an attack on a defence plant, and his investigation suggests that he'll be meeting members of his organisation that evening. Donning the costume of the Jester, Lane stakes out the beer hall where the meeting is due to take place - only to be surprised by the arrival of Batman, who reveals that the crook who Lane was trailing is also the former member of the Joker's gang who Batman wants to question. Both heroes are taken aback, however, when they see from their vantage point that the criminal and his associates are meeting with Nazi spymaster The Smiling Skull! Eavesdropping, they discover that the Axis mastermind is behind a plot to destroy critical defence manufacturing capacity in the US, and to disrupt a number of secret Allied projects which could help win the war! Having heard enough, the heroes crash into the building through the roof, and set about their foes - the Jester wades into the Axis sympathisers, while Batman faces off against the Smiling Skull, who attacks him with a hypodermic needle loaded with Joker venom! The Gotham Guardian is able to evade the attack, and a punch from the Jester sends one of the Skull's henchmen reeling - and onto the point of the hypodermic! The venom has immediate effect, killing the luckless Bundist and screwing his face up into a grimacing smile - and the other henchmen pause, now realising that the Nazi villain is only using them as cannon fodder. Without his dupes, the Smiling Skull seems to be outnumbered by the two heroes - but as they advance to capture him, he triggers a small explosive which brings the beer hall down around all of them! By the time Batman and the Jester are able to extract themselves from the collapsed building, the villain has escaped - but they content themselves with catching the remaining crooks, who are all too eager to share what they know of the Smiling Skull's plans. With these plans in his possession, Batman is confident that the attacks on the defence projects will be ended - and the Skull will probably flee the country. The Jester, meanwhile, consoles himself with the capture of the crook he'd been chasing, which will look good on Chuck Lane's record. For anyone who isn't aware, the Smiling Skull was a Charlton villain originally introduced as a former Nazi who fought Sarge Steel, and then seen in wartime adventures as a foe of Judomaster. He made very few appearances (and, unless I've missed something, has never been in a DC book), but it seemed to me that he might make a good opponent for these two heroes - and who knows, perhaps he'll be back in future. Next time: a Soldier Of Victory - or maybe more than one! Social/Sharing |

Unexpected with Batman being down and out! Deceptively detailed when you look at everything that went into this.
