Description

I�m not a fan of talking heads pages in comics. They typically function as either exposition dumps or evidence of lazy storytelling on the part of both writer and artist.

Here�s a talking heads page done well from Sammy Harkham�s 2023 book, Blood of the Virgin. I have several pages from the book and what I appreciate most about BotV, which Harkham has been working on for almost a dozen years, is the clear care and intentionality evident on every page.

This page features a series of close-ups, with all of them using slightly skewed profile shots and facial closeups.

A rundown:

The first panel features a three-quarters profile of Myron Finkle, a filmmaking hero of BotV lead character, Seymour

A tighter focus on Myron in panel 2

A 2/3 face closeup on Seymour in panel 3

An even tighter closeup on Myron in panel 4

An indirect profile of Myron in panels 5 and 6

A framed facial closeup on Myron in panel 7

Finally, a view of Seymour that gives the reader very little of his facial expression

The overall effect here is somewhat unsettling and I�ve come back to this passage in the book several times. I encourage you to read the book to understand how this sequence with Myron and Seymour underscores some of the themes of book.

It's a monologue and it's delivered like an actor would in one long take. It's broken up into panels to stagger the pacing and to give that one single line in panel four more weight by itself instead of being buried with the rest of the words.
