Description

11x17 bristol board, inks on printed bluelines

This is my first ever piece of published comic art! The X-Men issue of Marvels Snapshots is one of the best Cyclops comics ever and a fantastic standalone story on its own. I stumbled on pages from this book during Modern Mythology Comic Art's 2022 Black Friday sale. I had this realization of "comic pages are a thing you can buy!?" and "oh no this is probably going to be the start of something" (it was). I ended up buying four pages from this book because it is rad.

This splash page depicts Cyclops' horrible origin story in which he and his brother are thrown from a burning plane with the only remaining parachute which is, of course, on fire. He suffers a brain injury in the landing that wipes out his childhood memories, and then he's left alone and separated from his brother in a Nebraska orphanage that, as it turns out, is secretly being run by Mr. Sinister. Sinister will then spend years experimenting on and isolating a small child while also trying to gaslight him into thinking his brother doesn't exist. That's kind a lot, even for a comic book character.

I had never seen inks up close before and this page really gave me newfound appreciation for them. There's a lot of interesting texture and detail that's easy to miss when you're flying through a comic book.

Great storytelling device by Reilly to have this montage run through Cyclops' tragic origin!  It may explain why he's ultimately flawed if he can't overcome his past.
