This is the first cover for any of the six Star Wars: A New Hope movie adaptations that Heritage Auctions has ever offered!
In September of 1977, the very first Star Wars movie had just been released, and it was most certainly a hot commodity! Marvel had the comic book license and they had not even finished the six-part adaptation of the movie yet, so this is from early in the Star Wars chronology.
The six-issue Star Wars adaptation was an important shot-in-the-arm for Marvel Comics in 1977-1978. Those were difficult years for most publishers. But counting reprints and Whitman bagged-comics sales, Star Wars #1 is reported to have sold more than one million copies. This would out-sell other top Marvel books by at least three-to-one.
The cover for issue #5 features a Death Star attack on Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, as well as the Millennium Falcon! Rick Hoberg would go on to be one of the many artists on the Star Wars newspaper comic strip, and Dave Cockrum was just about to bust out as a mega-star artist for Marvel Comics (most notably for his work on the X-Men), so this cover has "Star Power" written all over it.
