Description

Like many readers I loved Peter David's gray Hulk saga--of course McFarlane's issues were a revelation, but I also loved the Hulk's next chapter as Joe Fixit. Jeff Purves had a distinctive style that was unlike anything else that came before it--not to mention after it. Did he ever do any other comic art? He worked with several inkers during his Hulk run but--not suprisingly--for me the best pairing was with Terry Austin, who brought his usual meticulous attention to detail to Purves' more cartoony style. This page sets up the next issue, which is one of my favorites: Dr. Doom manipulating the Hulk to go up against the newly-mutated Thing, who, finally, is stronger than the Hulk.

I look fondly back on Purves's all too short runon Hulk! Definitely brought a unique look that matched Fixit and his world perfectly. AND here you got Doom, too! Congrats!
