Description

American Vampire # 17 July 2011
"Ghost War" pg 17
Inks and wash over pencils on DC Vertigo art board
Pencils, Inks, and Tones: Rafael Albuquerque (Signed bottom right)
Writer: Scott Snyder (Signed bottom right)

Things go from bad to worse for Henry and his unit when they discover the terrible secrets inside the mysterious facility known only as "Unit 732." Will Pearl get there in time for a daring rescue?

American Vampire #17 is a very fast read. But trust me, that's not a bad thing. The issue is still filled to the brim with the great character moments we've come to expect from Scott Snyder. The art by Rafael Albuquerque is also another fine example of vampire on vampire action (can't we all just get along?). But finishing any issue of American Vampire always reinforces the notion that true love is fleeting. And in the case of American Vampire #17, that love leaves us for another month sabbatical with our pants around our ankles a little sooner than we would have liked. Where's the part where we get to spoon?!

Issue #17 of American Vampire picks up with our heroes, including Henry and Skinner Sweet, fleeing from their Japanese captors. The issue is briskly paced, comprised mostly of action as our ensemble cast makes their way through the enemy stronghold, guns blazing and grenades exploding. It should come as no surprise that Rafael Albuquerque demolishes the art of this issue. The action is brutal, energetic and easy to follow from panel to panel.

While most of the issue is comprised of characters yelling "Move!" and "Through Here!" types of commands, Scott Snyder does manage to hit us with some touching bits at the issue's conclusion that once again remind us that American Vampire is a story about characters at its core, it's not just gratuitous monster slaying. While it's true that American Vampire #17 flies by in an instant, it's also hard to hold that against Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque. They have crafted another comic that makes you anxious to find out what happens next. If anything, that's just good storytelling worth sacrificing some spooning action over.

It starts with a spark, horror and dire situation realized, and ends with hope being snuffed out.  The lighting with the wash brush direction is really nice to show that lighter burning bright until it doesn't.
