Description

At this stage, Marvel was teasing the return of the Fantastic Four to publishing, and had variant covers created celebrating different stages in the history of the series.

This cover celebrates my favorite era in the 70s when Ben Grimm was cured of being The Thing (thanks to extended radiation exposure from Hulk), gets replaced by Luke Cage, Hero for Hire, only for Reed to invent an exoskeleton that allowed Ben to remain human while also being able to dress up as The Thing and help out the team at close to full strength (and thus the head popped off in this image).

Of course less than 10 issues later Ben is blasted by Galactus during his battle with High Evolutionary and turned back into The Thing full time in the Counter-Earth storyline that brought back the Impossible Man

Oh, and I may have forgotten to mention that most of the issues at this point were being drawn by some rookie named George Perez - like I said, my favorite era of the title...

McNiven's thin lines lights up the cover with that same kind of young Perez energy! Immense details to bring the family dynamic into focus.
