Description

The Image style, with its dramatic poses, exaggerated musculature, and heavy use of hatch and cross-hatch, took the US Comics market by storm in the early 1990s. So it was inevitable that, amidst the copycats, it would be subjected to a deliberate parody.

Grant Morrison is actually a big fan of Rob Liefeld's work on X-Force, which he likened in his book Supergods to the high energy of punk rock music. Morrison was writing Doom Patrol at the time this was released, hence the title of this one-shot triple-sized issue.

This pages features The Scratch, a parody of Wolverine, his gauntlet filled with cutlery and hand tools instead of claws. His shirt is one big cross-hatched net, and he tumbles across the page twisted like a pretzel, a nod to the improbable anatomy found in Liefeld's postured figures. As he screams, he even has unnecessary Kirby Krackle in his throat! Obviously everyone was having fun roasting Liefeld, who has proven to be a good sport about such things.

Six pencilers worked to get this book out in a timely fashion. This page is signed by Steacy, so we know who penciled it. Four inkers worked on the issue (including Walt Simonson!), but I don't know which of them had a hand in this page.

This looks a lot more like Liefeld's Prophet character if it's a parody.  Too many feet, smells fishy.
