During the early 1990s, DC and Marvel were adapting to the dynamic, heavily muscled style of Image Comics. Some artist embraced it; some counterprogrammed; some satirized it.
The late 90s saw a mix of styles as independent comics continued to proliferate despite periodic speculative market crashes. The Image style gradually faded, and traditional heroism made a comeback. The X-Men and Spider-Man films made some impact in the marketplace, but the juggernauts of the MCU and the Nolan Batman movies were still ahead and did not yet wag the dog.
