DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron Annual #11, drawn by long-time contributor Shawn van Briesen, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Infinity Inc #11, original art by Jerry Ordway.Title: "A New Birth Of Freedom!" Story: "In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places — some that have existed, or might have existed, and others that can't, couldn't or shouldn't exist. The result: stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow." Imagine a world without heroes - a world which is not any Earth we know. In 1941, in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbour, Imperial Japan prepares to launch a full-scale invasion of Hawaii - but to this world comes Uncle Sam, bringing with him a handful of rookie heroes (Miss America, Neon The Unknown, Red Torpedo, Magno The Magnetic Man, the Invisible Hood), and one former Justice Society member, Hourman! The battle to save Hawaii is long, and bloody - a battle which is eventually won, but at a huge cost. Hourman dies in the conflict, slain by Sumo The Samurai, a super-powered Japanese villain. The remaining heroes of Uncle Sam's band regroup on the US mainland, asked by that world's President to help the US battle the threats of the Nazis in Europe and the Japanese in the Pacific. Unable to return to their own world, they agree - and stand as America's last line of defence against their enemies, until they are able to launch assaults on all their foes. Over the next few years, their ranks are swelled by the first mystery-men (and women) to emerge in this dimensional plane: El Carim, master of ancient Egyptian magics and futuristic super-science; secret agent Black X; The Orchid, mysterious female crime-fighter (seen very briefly in the pages of The Clock); Wonder Boy, super-powered youth from space; Diamond Jack, wielder of a powerful mystic ring, and others, until this team grows to the point where they take on a new name, declaring themselves no longer simply Freedom Fighters, but --- the All-Star Squadron! (And yes, I know that some of these heroes were originally published by Fawcett Comimcs, rather than the Quality Comics heroes who have traditionally formed the Freedom Fighters, but as noted, this is not Earth X, and - as this is an Elseworlds tale - these are not the Freedom Fighters we've seen elsewhere.) As the 1994 Annuals all told Elseworlds stories, I knew I wanted something that was in line with those tales, and reflected the unique design of those covers - and Shawn came through spectacularly for me! SVB is the man for that Golden Age kind of comics look! He seems to know the comics and movies of that time and applies that look in his illustration. Perfect artist to get you a shot of that authenticity.

Honestly this outshines the cover which inspired it. Fantastic selection of unusual and oft-forgotten heroes
