Description

Michael Dunne gave me permission to try to paint an Avengers #4 pencil/ink piece by the great, and sorely missed, Mike Machlan.

Mike was known as a phenomenal inker as well as a solid pencil artist. So when I looked at all his posted work here on comicartfans, Mike's interpretation of the classic Kirby Avengers #4 cover stood out. So I chose this piece to interpret in acrylic paint.

I did not want to redraw Mike's comic book style in more realistic fashion. As a painter, I tried to add just enough lighting to enhance Mike's art without changing or diluting his wonderful effort. This is my homage to Mike, whose passing was a great loss to the comic art world.

Thank you so very much. I tried to make the piece as painterly as possible while respecting Mike's original line drawing. Mike is terribly missed by all in the industry.

From a composition point of view for scenes like this, I favor Kirby's "Big O" layout. All the characters overlap. There isn't a character hanging out in space by themselves. I used the Wasp figure as a way to connect the Giant Man figure to the Iron Man figure. The left hand of the Iron Man figure overlaps with the Avengers logo too. I feel the eye is guided to stay within the bounds of the group and not wander off the page.
