DescriptionPicked this up at NYCC 2023.Jesse Lonergan transitioned from school teacher to full-time comics in 2019 and I only came to know his art, a few years later, thanks to Yo Kuri. When Mignola broke the news that Jesse would be the artist on Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea, I was excited to see what he would bring to the Hellboy universe. He's kinda known as the "panel guy" with a unique vision on how he wants to do comics. He seems to take the conventional visual aspects/rules of reading comics and creates a different /odd way to create panel pages - in a good way - a way that makes you think. Lonergan has said he uses the panels and gutters on a page as objects within the comic and plays with how the eye can be moved across the page. In this way the panels become measurements of distance to create movement through space, and in this example - movement through TIME! Mignola has created a story that really plays into Lonergan's unique strengths and this page is one, that I think, showcases those strengths perfectly! THhe series connects the life of Miss Truesdale, in Victorian London, to a young gladiator's, Anum Yassa, in ancient Hyperborea. In turn, on this page, we see Miss Truesdale's link to Anum Yassa, also start to connect, to Thor, Hercules, Makoma, and Hellboy. What is interesting here is that the moments that are out of time - are visually depicted without boarders - which I missed when I read the book because in color the colors created their own boarder. When i pointed this out to Jesse told me that sometimes it's interesting to let the subconscious see what isn't there. Here is a great review of the issue that really helped enrich my appreciation of this book http://www.multiversitycomics.com/reviews/miss-truesdale-4/ Mignola on Lonergan: “I fell in love with Jesse’s stuff the moment I stumbled across it, but it took a long time for me to wrap my head around a way we could work together,” said writer Mike Mignola. “His storytelling is so great but amazingly unique and I’m such a control freak when it comes to how to pace a story—I didn’t want to tie his hands with the way I structure things. But he is just so good… Eventually I came up with the idea for Miss Truesdale (an odd one, even for me) and just couldn’t think of anyone better to draw it. We met, we talked, and I think we settled on a way to collaborate. It meant writing a plot that was tight in some places and very, very loose in others. I had to trust Jesse to work his magic—and for me it’s hard to really trust an artist I’ve never worked with, even one as good as Jesse—but I did it and he did what he does and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I think this ends up being one of the most unique extensions of the Hellboy Universe, and after almost thirty years (and some very odd stories) that’s saying something.” Social/Sharing |

Splendid write up, Steve. Jesse is a unique and exciting talent with an approach to the page unlike any I can remember. I asked him at NYCC if he'd experienced the Mignola control and he said he'd heard that reputation but hadn't experienced it. Your Mignola quote adds insight to that conversation, so thank you.

I don't know this book, but I'm intrigued by the art and your comments. The page you've posted looks simple enough, but has a nice style and rhythm to it. I especially love that large middle panel. Jesse is very clearly good at visual storytellling and I'd like to see more of what she might do with a story from the Hellboy universe. Thanks for sharing this! I loved your write-up and I want to check this book out.

Nice Lonergan example, full of motion and of course unique panel designs!

Great writeup, and great page. I can to know of Lonergan from your CAL video and your discussion of this page, so you've passed the baton of discovery on.
