14x22.5" Strathmore art board features story page #11 of a 13 page story "The Rock!" by Robert Kanigher w/original graphite pencil and ink artwork by Joe Kubert (1926-2012) in a five panel story with the image area of 13" x 19". DC's most famous military warrior, Sgt. Franklin John Rock, appears in early prototype form in this action packed page, as Private Jimmy "The Rock", a boxer who is now a soldier that never accepts defeat with his battle cry "C'Mon And Fight!" which repeats throughout the story. This January 1959 G.I. Combat appearance led to a more refined image of the Sgt. Rock character in the April 1959 issue of DC's "Our Army At War" title. This story is where the creation began, in editor Robert Kanigher's tale. Joe Kubert registers here as the character's definitive artist, just as the latter Sgt. Rock would define much of Kubert's artistic career. The story tells the tale of a boxer who was not a champion but a never surrender "human obstacle course" that all others had to get through first to win. He uses this attitude in the midst of WWII to single handedly save and inspire his fellow soldiers and defeat a German Panzer, one on one. The page presented here shows "The Rock" rising with a bazooka in hand and coming face to face with the Panzer. He delivers his battle cry "C'Mon And Fight!" in the fourth panel and the Panzer fires his shot in the last panel. Page has lt. aging/wear. Top bar is a stat with title and DC logo. Lt. soiling and lower edge has some lt. tan staining. The close up of "The Rock's" face in fourth panel is a cut in of replacement artwork and is taped on reverse side with black tape. Overall page displays nicely and is Fine. This page has never been offered for sale and is new to the market. A unique chance to own a part of Sgt. Rock history w/this original page of artwork by a true comic master. Story page 4 (an all boxing content page) sold at auction in Sept. 2003 for $14,400.
