DescriptionA nice cover from Ten Grand one of Joe Straczynski’s titles released under his (then much publicised) Joe’s Comics imprint at Image comics. This was an ok series but this cover spoke to me under its own strength and artistic merits. Even if I always liked Oeming’s art, from his humble beginning at Caliber to his peak on Powers, including what seemed like a very Pearson influenced phase, I never owned anything substantial from him, save for a nice set of prelims. So, this fits the need. First, I really like the juxtaposition of the ordinary and supernatural. The guy with the gun seemingly jumping from an off-camera rooftop perhaps, which could be a typical and well-done action shot save for the tiny fact that he’s got this huge blurb of demonic manifestation springing out of his face, not that he seems to mind much (is he even aware of it?). Second, the sense of motion in this illustration is fantastic. We don’t where the guy is coming from or where he is going but the sense of speed is evident. From the position of his arms to his floating clothes. Then the demonic manifestation bursting from his face, all on a diagonal angle really increases that sense of speed and motion. Third, the anime/manga influence is extremely strong with this one. The badass guy himself looks like he could have popped out of a Cowboy Bebop or Darker than Black episode and the demonic manifestation REALLY evokes the worst Go Nagai nightmares to me (Devilman or Violence Jack come to mind, under Nagai himself or Masaaki Yuasa’s genius). Look at all those eyes, spikes and teeth…Only Mr Oeming could confirm this intuition, that the influence was conscious or stemming from the Zeitgeist of the times. And fourth, this is all storytelling of course and not just one of those pinupy covers of characters standing heroically against all odds (and no one basically), ready for action. This tells a story and, even more important, prompts the potential reader to open the book to see what this is all about as this seemingly melange of genres is intriguing at the very least. Great concept, execution and all over cover from Mr Oeming. Social/Sharing |

Does the top half of the cover remind anyone of DWJ's work, or is it just me? Anyway, I've never heard of this title and it's not something I'd read, but the art is absolutely something to admire. I've yet to read Powers, though it IS sitting in my "to read" pile and look forward to getting to it whe nthe time comes. My biggest takeaway fro mthis piece is the sense of movement, which you aptly pointed out, as well as the composition. Really terrific stuff!

Actually works a lot better for me in b&w. The published colors are just too garish and ends up affecting the dramatic nature of the scene.

Fred, that's a beautiful illustration, and I would never have guessed MAO. Congrats. Gorgeous ink-slinging and a dynamic composition.

And to your point, I'm not a fan of "pin-ups" but this is very much a narrative illustration. Bravo!

I understand those collectors who collect by character over artist but, to me, this is one of the better Oeming covers I've seen even if it's not from one of his signature series like Powers. Great sinewy monster/entity and, as you said, quite dynamic as a result of the staging of human and monster.

Great atmosphere to this mixing horror and crime noir! The flat colors work to heighten the effect with the flames added that have prompted this demon to emerge.

Strong sense of flowy movement throughout this one, with the sort of melding of top and bottom figures...super effective stuff. Congrats!

Wow! What a mind-blowing cover by Mike Avon Oeming! I've never read the book, but if I'd seen this cover, I definately would've! It's such a powerful scene of a demonic being pouring out of the gunman! I love the style the gunman is drawn in, simple like the characters in Powers, but totally believable. The Demon, on the other hand, is crazy and detailed, but free-flowing. It IS like something Daniel Warren Johnson would've come up with (I agree with Ruben)! Fantastic cover by Oeming! Great pick-up!

Love this, Fred! LOVE!! IT!! I always enjoy Oeming's work (regardless of the writer he's working with ;) ), and when he nails it, he -NAILS- it. He not only nails it here, but also throws in the hammer. The drawing is elegant and simple like you can only get from someone who has spent their whole life thinking about and practicing the techniques on display here; storytelling, mood, lighting, drama, and "purity" of the moment being rendered. SUPER cool piece, F M! A killer by Oeming! Congrats!
