Description

From Heritage Auction Description Eduardo Barreto - Jonah Hex (Unpublished) Story Page Original Art (c. 2000s). This dynamic pencil page sees Jonah Hex engaging in a tense firefight. The page has no publishing information and appears to have been unused. Graphite on DC Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". In Excellent condition.

Being a Jonah Hex fan I stumbled across this auction and put out a bid on a whim and "surprise" I won.

I want to do some more homework to see if Eduardo did an issue of the Palmiotti run but have not had the time. Still published or not - this is a great page with plenty of action and great action sequence.

Wish DC would publish more of the Jonah Hex books but political correctness seems to have push this anti-hero to the sidelines for now.

Always appreciated Barreto's artwork and simply loved his run on The Shadow for DC. This is a great example of his excellent storytelling skills and shows his versitility at drawing everything from wonderful face expressions to horses. Great pick-up!

I know it's hard for Hex fans to hear, but there's no need to blame political correctness when they pushed a movie with James Brolin and Megan Fox, they had long comics run with top creators (Bernet, Palmiotti, Cooke), he appeared in CW Arrowverse Legends of Tomorrow, and was part of the DC animated universe in Justice League Unlimited.  The longest gap between Hex's own title was from 1987 and 2006 and that was long before political correctness.  With 180 comics of his own title, you don't think he's had more run than any other western hero?

Marcus,

Perhaps it was after the height of PC times, but I feel like DC pulled the Jonah Hex Omnibus back and never did an Omni run for the Palmiotto run due to Hex's association with the Confederacy. Didio was no longer running it and we had a different set of eyes on it. This was at the same time where DC starting heavily trying to build a younger more diverse younger audience. You are right it was the longest running Western and had a lot of great incarnations.

I hope DC and Marvel can survive as print comics as I know myself and others of my age bracket have long abandoned most current comics. I just long for the Captian Comet Archive that never was and other collections.

BUT what do you think of the art?

I like how Barreto uses a mix of familiar western imagery in this chase where Hex has to make his stand.  Very strong first panel with the clouds in a jet stream to help emphasize the speed.  The visual ramp starting from under the horse's legs up to the ridge across the 2nd tier is pretty cool too.
