DescriptionPublished 1962 by Archie ComicsMonster Gorilla! The Fly was created by Joe Simon and first published in 1959. The series ran for 39 issues through three imprints before being cancelled in 1967. The series was revived in the 80's under the Red Circle imprint. DC later licensed the character for its Impact comics line. The character has reclaimed by Joe Simon in 1999. Tom Brevoort wrote a column on the Fly being a precursor to the creation of Spider-Man. The Fly's companion was Fly Girl debuted in 1961 created by Robert Bernstein and John Rosenberger. Fly Girl was published in DC comics and is part of the New Crusaders published by Archie Comics. At an early age back in the early 60's when I first discovered Super-Hero comics, I eagerly sought any that I could find. Some of those that I found were the Super-Hero line from Archie Comics. I was most taken by The Fly and Fly Girl. The John Rosenberger art was as good as anything else being published at the time and Fly Girl was my favorite Super-Heroine at the time. Nostalgically, I always wanted to add a John Rosenberger piece with Fly Girl to my collection and this checks all the boxes. Plus a Giant Gorilla! Social/Sharing |

My biggest takeaway from your description is you mentioning that you were a little kid discovering comics in the early 60's. People keep searching for the fountain of youth, but they don't realize it's already been found and flowing at YOUR house! I love the few Rosenberger Romance covers I've seen, so it's really neat to see the same, beautiful lines here on an early superhero Archie cover. Oh, and does anyone really NOT like giant gorillas on comic book covers?

Make noise, Fly Girl, show art fans that you're scared
Ah yeah, like you're in despair
Big choice, Fly Girl, in the hands gorilla
Ah yeah, like you trapped right here
Rejoice, Fly Girl, throw your hands in the air
Ah yeah, like you just don't care
Old school sounds, gun drawn blastin'
All the Archies in his house, you know they be Apein'
Coolin' out with style like back in the days
Rosenberger's skills, putting covers in their place
Funky fresh, I'm with the ink finesse
He says got big art board so you could impress
All the Fly Girl, yeah, the Miki's lady
See, ain't no doubt about what's happening cover
