Description11x17 bristol board, pencil and ink.Susan Storm drops by Utopia to visit the X-Men's resident Atlantean King. She's greeted by Utopia's leaders, Cyclops and Emma Frost, though she's not especially excited to see the latter. Man, I kept coming up with horrible unintended ice-related puns while trying to write this and I am now annoyed with myself. Ugh! I actually haven't read Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four run, I was getting a little burned out on comics around this time, so I wasn't aware that Steve Epting ever drew Utopia until I saw this page. I think this is a gorgeous rendition of what is basically a hardscrabble military fortress built into a big lump of space rock. The constant presence of the gulls add a lot to the stark northern Pacific atmosphere. Epting's art has a beautiful timelessness to it and I love how his inkstrokes bring out detail and texture in the gull wings and the bits of military hardware sticking out of the island. Even without the word bubbles, it's pretty clear that feelings are a little ("chilly"? no. "frosty"? no. "icy"? aagh. dammit, Emma!) uncongenial between Emma and Sue. I also really like Epting's take on the Simone Bianchi Cyclops design, particularly in the last panel that shows off the visor and asymmetrical shoulder piping. Someone along the way realized that Scott's costume actually has four stripes on the shoulder though and, a little surprisingly, someone went to the effort of editing the missing stripe into the published version. Well, I appreciate the attention to detail. It's good to be precise about these things! Social/Sharing |

Rad visually how there are no gutters between panels. Also dig that Cyke lots in the last panel. Congrats!

Fantastic X-Men Utopia piece in FF, I wasn't aware of this issue featuring them, nice when art from books I don't collect show me a story of something I didn't know exists. Great find!

Oh women know when there's a snake in their midst who steal other women's men. Their frosty exchange says it all and is the highlight centerpiece of the page.
