Description

After his impressive work on Crisis on Infinite Earths,George Perez looked for the next big place to make his mark in the rebooted DC Universe. Frank Miller had claimed Batman; the offer of Superman had lured John Byrne away from Marvel. Perez left top-selling New Teen Titans to put his post-Crisis stamp on Wonder Woman.

Writing as well as penciling, he leaned heavily into mythological themes instead of traditional superheroics. After two years, Perez continued writing but handed pencil duties over to Chris Marrinan. Inker Willie Blyberg had joined the team in issue #23, following in the illustrious footsteps of Bruce Patterson and Bob McLeod.

Marrinan's first story arc had two elements. One was the editorially mandated participation in the DC-wide sci-fi event "Invasion," which did not fit Perez's themes well and was kept minimally intrusive. The more amusing story was a riff on Marvel's "Secret Wars II" event in which Hermes (like The Beyonder) came to Earth and caused all kinds of havoc through his clueless and overbearing "fish out of water" ways. Diana played straight-woman to his antics, restoring order and educating him how to behave among mortals.

On this page, Boston has been wrecked by a battle against Greek gods. Hermes is eager to win the worship of mankind and offers to fix the city. However, soon enough he'll have to deal with the obnoxious antics of the gadfly called The Creeper.

Marrinan did an excellent job maintaining the "look and feel" Perez had established for the series. Check out Perez trademarks such as "large crowd scene" and "floating head panel." Marrinan doesn't have Perez' knack for perfect faces, but few do. Blyberg's hatched inks remind us that the 90s are upon us, with the nascent Image style making itself known at both Marvel and DC.

Pretty nice as Marrinan and Blyberg was transitioning the audience from the Perez art slowly so they had to bring similar layouts and detailed work.  Good thing Creeper will knock Hermes down a peg or two.
