DescriptionI hear a certain canucklehead is turning 50 next year so thought I’d post a few pieces to close out ’23 featuring said canucklehead. Or, to start, a piece featuring his main baddie :)My 22nd new artist in the collection in ’23 in Bart Sears! When I think Bart Sears I think Wizard magazine first, as he had lotsa cover and interior work on that mag which I religiously read. Then I think some of his late ‘90s Blade covers and the mid 2000s Sabretooth limited series this splash is from. It’s a quick solid read, nothing earth shattering, but if there’s a character that would be at the top of my list to be featured as my Sears example, it’d be Victor Creed right there with Eric Brooks. OK! Got Creed in full pursuit here, enjoying the fun and sport of the hunt in this snowy setting. And this guy can be a tad sadistic at times. Super muscled as per Sears style here, highlighted by them shoulders. We know we can get some overly muscled dudes with Sears but I like that he had that unique stamp on his work, and that whenever I saw a Sears image there was no question it was him. These inks look great in person, too, with common collaborator of the time Mark Pennington providing that gradient of line weight to delineate the muscles. Good stuff! Social/Sharing |

He's coming right at you! A wonderful example of Sears work. Great character design, and the pine needles above are an especially nice touch.

Even though its in black and white, Sears' rendering always makes me think his subject is made of/covered in chrome. Congrats on a great pick up!

Dig the different inking styles here.
I was remiss in no noting in my description but you and a couple others have mentioned...those different inking techniques used definitely add to the image! Got Creed hinself, the furry parts of his costume, the trees up top and snow spatter on 'em...all provides a nice contrast. Thanks for the add, man!

Oh, but Sabertooth cause me grief
Close friends of mine love Victor Creed
As they can see in disbelief
Fluttering lashes, blood lips and gnarly white teeth
I don't Wizard but I quiver whenever you come near
And I cannot buy covers because the thrill and the fear
I wanna stop it but like it too much, must buy it Bart Sears
It's wrong but Sabertooth in line
I’ve got my own Pennington, but inks fall in deep
I cannot resist him, I've been advised to keep
I trot to Red Wolf, not a daunting read
It's wrong but I want Tooth tonight
Sears and delight
Bart the way through the line
With a mutant hot pursuit
Oh, I'll fall in love with you
Sears and delight
Mark the inks through the line
With a Marvel Sabertooth
Oh, I'll fall in love with you

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Actually 50 was a few years ago but thanks for thinking of me. You do mean me right?

Oh yeah, for sure. Heightened senses, right? Sense of humor, anyway. And you do like to partake of a cigar now and then, correct? But, you might be a little taller.

Yes. I am taller and much much less hairier. With each passing year I'm turning into Xavier.

Bart sears was the king of overly musclebound characters for a while there, wasn't he? So wild! Props to a great character splash, but I also want to mention that I love the texture he created up at the top as well!

That is a FANTASTIC portrayal of Sabretooth. And I'm with Ruben in regard to those beautiful tree textures at the top & right side of the page.

Loved the art on that mini. Sears did the character's ferocity justice.

Impressive splash with muscles rippling in distinctive Sears fashion. Reminds me of Brute and Babe and also Sears' How to Draw column in Wizard magazine. As others have mentioned, the contrast in styles and techniques between the tree branches and the central figure is also quite nice. Congrats!

Wow, this is awesome! Sears is underrated. This looks so fluid and organic. I think Wizard, but also X-O Manowar, which he did some great work on.

He's mean, he's feral, and his idea of fun will not be fun for you. This is an amazing piece and as on point of a representation of Sabretooth as there ever has been.
